Matthew Daly born c. 1880 co cork to parents Patrick Daly & Mary Meade. Cannot locate him on Censuses of 1901/1911 in Ireland. In 1911 parents return states 9 children born & 9 living. Have tried immigration records to USA with no result. Can anyone solve the mystery? Obviously didnt die by 1911. Any help appreciated.

Could he possibly have joined the Army and be abroad in 1901?
I don t know where he was born in Cork but there is the following record
Matthew Daly, aged 17 residence Ballintowlas, Midleton ,Cork joined militia 23 Aug 1898. then noted as having joined regular army 23 Sep1898.
Not much information and no next of kin given unfortunately.
I can t find any regular army records for him.

If he's in an Army Barracks in 1901 it will be hard to find him as they are listed by initials only.

On these two is a M D born Cork in Barracks both listed as 22 years.

Sorry , don t know much about militias , only that a lot of boys joined a militia before joining/or not the regular army.
Matthews militia records are available at Findmypast, but not a lot of information on militia/army service.

House and building returns for both those census posted by Sinann are police barracks.

Oh sorry, I didn't look at the detail,
The Militias records are in the British Military Archives.
We had this question recently http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=691191.msg5350710#msg5350710

Hmm wonder could he have joined the R I C as theres a Matthew Daly or Matt on the prison register in Galway 1916 termed as other meaning he's not the prisoner something to do with Defense of the Realm act.
Policemen were not allowed serve in their native county.

Can I ask do posters think Matthew was in Irish or British Army as I know nothing about either. :)
