Title: Rothwell - Child deaths are these correct? Any help appreciated
Post by: romawi on Saturday 05 July 14 05:10 BST (UK)
I have found that my ggrandparents Richard and Alice Rothwell from Heap, Heywood, Lancs (1861)and Birkenhead, Cheshire (1871), had 11 children in total. Only 6 of which survived. Not unusual, but still a lot. None of the missing 5 can be traced through census, so died very young between census's.
I have definitely found 9 children now: But am missing the last two:
One child Albert (definitely related) died aged 0 in 1866 and on the cheshire BMD there are two more Rothwell children listed as dying that year in Birkenhead very young. The question I have is is there anyway I can find out details of either births or deaths to confirm or reject without requesting certs? What other resources are available for either Birkenhead specifically Holy Trinity?

Cheshire Death indexes for the years: 1866

Hoping someone out there maybe able to help

are there any of these you did not have ??.....if you have all these children - can you post the names of the definites you have - and those you think might be ?....this will save a little time in researching the 11 children ...
do you know whether Albert was the 1st one born in Birkenhead ?

Edenfield to Heywood is 7 miles
is this a possible ??...was Richard a weaver by occupation ??

Baptism: 3 Apr 1864 Chapel, Edenfield, Lancashire, England
Ellis Rothwell - Son of Richard Rothwell & Alice
    Abode: Plunge
    Occupation: Weaver
    Baptised by: Charles F. Hildyard

I have looked up the village of Plunge - and it just comes up with details of Edenfield ...so no help there

Hi, thank you i have all these plus - Joseph Rothwell (1867), Emma (1878), I am not sure if Albert was first. Richard and Alice were married in 1860, so I thought that maybe there must have been one or two before Albert in the 5 years after they married. That's why I was looking from 1860 to 1865. The only other two I could see were Hannah 1862-1866 and Richard 1864-1866 but need to tie them to the parents somehow.

As for Ellis - I thought maybe this might work but found him again in the 1871 census alive and well with another family of Rothwell's and father wasn't a weaver but a boilermaker, always.
Cheers

1865 John Rothwell registered Halliwell mmn Booth
1867 Hannah Rothwell registered Halliwell mmn Booth
1868 Martha Rothwell registered Halliwell mmn Booth

I will look and see if they are together in 1871

Heather

added: I think they are the children of James and Mary who are in Halliwell in 1871

Thank you all so much for your continued help with this. I live in New Zealand so have been off line for the night but back now :)
Yes the marriage for Richard and Alice is correct - her maiden name Booth. She grew up in Heywood and they both continued living there for a number of years until the move to Paisley in Scotland around 1881. I didn't think that they had a child out of wedlock so much as had one whilst married between 1860 and Alberts birth and then sudden death in 1865/6. That just seemed unusual.
James looks like a real possibility, on Ancestry I can see he was born Oct qtr so would have missed the 1861 census in April. Just need a death for him now before 1871 as he's not on there at all.
Will keep looking. John/Hannah/Martha births look like they belong together - will look and see if I can find more info.

a bit confused

But  he WOULD be in the 1861 census....he would be aged 6 months old ...if he was christened 26th nov 1860

one in mar qtr 1861
one in sep qtr 1861 ...who would have been on the census

so it has to be
Mar qtr 1861   Rothwell James   Bury    8c  290

Heywood is under Bury  Register

heatherjulie - you are of course correct!! Obviously I hadn't woken up properly yet. I think this one has strong possibilities and as you say if he died first Q 1861 he would have missed the census.
Cheers and apologies for the confusion :) Off to get a strong coffee now!!
