Title: The Menai Bridge Inn/Tavern, High Street, Llangefni?

Does anybody please have any information about the Menai Bridge Inn/Tavern in Llangefni?

My ancestors ran the pub from the 1830's through to about the 1900's. The pub was located on the corner of the High Street and Field Street but I believe it may have closed in about 1905.

I have a record of my ancestors being there in the 1841 census through to the 1901 census but the pub appears to change its name in about 1906 to Menai Bridge House which suggests it became a residentail property or another business after that.

The pub was initially run by a William Jones and then after his death his wife Catherine Jones before the final licensee being their daughter Sarah Williams (nee Jones).

Any information on this will be much appreciated.

Hi Wilcoxon,

Thanks for the newspaper cuttings they are a great help.

So the licensee lost his licence for selling alcohol to an under age boy. The William Jones in the 1903 clipping is the son of the original licensee (my 3x great grandfather). A very inauspicious end to a pub that was in the same family for 70 years.

The Capt. Hugh Williams mentioned was the husband of Sarah Williams (nee Jones) the youngest daughter of William Jones senior. Hugh Williams was a sea captain hence the title.

I think a visit to Llangefni archives is needed to look into this more.

Are you still active?  Have failed to pick her up in census, before she marries, but she was born in Liverpool, Lancashire.

In 1891 my gt. gt. gt aunt (also born in Liverpool) was staying with Evan & Maargart.  As her grandmother's maiden name was WILLIAMS I thought there may have been a family connection, so was plugging numbers into names, to see if she were staying with a cousin, a friend or a mixture of both! But, of course, with it being Wales, it could just well be that they made the odd bob or two from the equivalent of an AirBnB!
