I think it may be Hicksen , but there are very few around ???
The e in the name and in master looks to be written in the same way.
A mystery man.
-
Hi...Yes I did wonder and have tried both combinations without success..the se in the word second is formed the same way as the se in Hicksen.....shame there is no Christian name :-\
Thanks for trying...maybe some researcher may google the surnames may be brought here.

His Flintshire Roll of Honour card in the Archives Office in Hawarden gives his regimental details and his address as Eaton Cottages in Leeswood. It says he served 1 year and 7 months and that he was wounded in action in France and died of the wounds he received. The card was signed by Gladys A Phillips on 16th Sept 1919.

Wonderful....and what a lot of interesting info you have found for him...I have contacted a tree owner to let him know about the photo and to offer a high res copy.
Thanks again ;)
Carol
-
do you think the Grammar School restaurant in Bala would be interested as well , a talking point to hang on the wall :)
-
Yes I do...it would make a great canvas print wouldn't...certainly worth a thought...someone may also recognise an ancestor!!!!
Carol
-
just wondering what the outcome of this was ?
-
Hi...I sent a high resolution copy of the photo to the tree owner with a link to this thread...I never got a reply >:( I'm glad I didn't post the original.

I passed the school / restaurant again in Bala last week and just thought about it again.
As for the tree owner, I would be tempted to ask they if they had received it. ;)
-
Yes I did send a message asking if they received the email...I also checked the following day to see if they had been on Ancestry and they had...so I sent another message saying that I was disappointed in the lack of response to the photo I sent them...I haven't heard from them neither by email or Ancestry message.

Hi
I hope I am not too late to this chat. But I have something of interest to add. My great uncle, who lived most his life in Cape Town, South Africa, was a collector of art and also antique books. In his collection, I found a book of French poetry awarded to one William Given Jones of Balla Grammar School, on prize day in July 1878, and awarded by no other than our esteemed William T. Phillips. Look at the inscription on the inner front cover, and you will note that the handwriting is identicle to that on the back of the photograph that began is search. How this book ended up in South Africa is another mystery that one more industrious than me could research. Possibly William Jones immigrated to the country later in his life. See attached pictures of the book and the inscribed inner cover. Thoughts?
-
Hi and welcome to Rootschat...good to hear from you and your interesting input....your pictures didn't attach....if you try again you will need to rename the file.

How interesting
Could this be William Given Jones, but I can find no - one with that middle name.
http://welshnewspapers.llgc.org.uk/en/page/view/3308974/ART37/%20bala%20grammar%20school
I wonder if this is W G Jones, sadly no Christian names are given, only details of fathers.
EXTRA PRIZES.—French ;
Jones, sextus (son of Mr. W. Jones, North and S. Wales Bank, Portmadoc), "Enfnces Celebres."
-
Had trouble posting the pictures using ipad. Trying again with PC.
-
Could his name be William Owen Jones
Is there a title for the book ?
-
I wonder if this is him, it`s the same name for the father, who is a bank manager in Portmadoc.
1871 116 High St, Porthmadoc
Williams Jones 29 bank accountant b Bethesda.
Kate Jones wife 26 b Wrexham
William Owen Jones 6 b Wrexham
Elizabeth Jones 4 b Wrexham
Joseph Henry Jones 2 b Portmadoc
Ann Roberts 26 servant
Jane Evans 59 servant
-
In 1891 William and Kate :D are still in Portmadog.
He is a bank manager at the North and South Wales bank.
This must be our family of Jones .
-
I believe you are all correct. I misread the handwriting and William Owen Jones makes more sense. Let me get back to you on the title of the book. I just arrived in New York, and the book is at my family's home in Cape Town. I will ask my sister, who is there, to check the book title.
-
Here`s how the book ended up in South Africa.
North Wales Express 11 March 1910
Portmadoc Wedding in South Africa. JONES—TAIT.
The marriage of Mr William Owen Jones, of Portmadoc, North Wales (manager of the Bank of Africa, Cape Town), to Mrs Emmie Tait (widow of Mr lYl. L. Tait, and daughter of the late Mr Godfrey Sichel ), was. solemnised on February l5 th. The ceremony took place at .St. Saviour's Church, Claremont, and was attended by many prominent city and suburban residents.

WO must have been about 45 by this time, maybe he was a widower.
This is turning into a great story. :)
-
Wow. Great research team. The name of the book (one of you asked) is "Enfants Celebs" by Louis Colet. Published by Paris Libraries, on 79 Boulevard Saint Germany in 1876.
-
That confirms we have the right man, it`s the same book prize mentioned in the newspapers
Here is where he is buried.
St. John's Cemetery, Wynberg, Cape Town.
William Owen Jones. Born 21-06-1864 in Wrexham, Wales.
Died 27-05-1921 in Wynberg.
: Wulfsohn. have sent you a message.
-
William Owen Jones is an interesting person in my family. My father "Owen Tait" is named after him.
Emma Marion Stuart Sichel married my great grandfather Murdoch Morison Tait. Murdoch, a lawyer in Cape Town committed suicide because of gambling debts. Leaving Emma penniless. Owen Jones was a banker in South Africa, and "she married the bank manager."
They had a daughter called Olwen Stuart Owen-Jones, Born in Holyhead, Anglesey. 5 January 1911. She married Alfred Randel Falck. I believe they had two children Elizabeth, and Owen Falck.
Elizabeth had two Children: Jenny and Garry Wade. Owen married Hazel Logie, and had three boys. Gregory, Richard, and Roger. These children were born in the 1970s so I assume will still be alive.
-
William Owen Jones was baptised at St Giles Wrexham on 13 July 1864 son of William and Kate, of Egerton Street , Wrexham. His father `s occupation was an accountant.
There is a marriage in Chester 1862 that seems to fit but I don`t have full details of fathers occupations.
William Jones 17 Dec 1862 St John, Chester, Age appx 21 Single Father's Name: Owen Jones
Kate Jones age 21 Single Spouse's Father's Name: Joseph Jones
Kate is found in Wrexham , her father is a grocer.b Ysceifiog , Flintshire
I`ve not been able to find William Owen Jones in Wales after 1881.
(Olwen supposed to have been born Holyhead )
Family search has this baptism
Olwen Stuart Baptism 27 Mar 1911 Cape of Good Hope, South Africa
Father William Owen Jones Mother Emma Marion Stuart Jones .
I`m guessing the birth wasn`t registered in Wales. I can`t find it .
What a long journey to take a baby.
-
What do people think his surname was.. Jones, or Owen-Jones. I have always assumed the latter, but now think Owen must be his middle name.
-
In the newspaper article about the prize giving he is just Jones.
His Grandfather was Owen Jones, so it is likely to be a middle name.
-
Brilliant. Many thanks. It is wonderful to fill the spaces and add detail to the life of William Owen Jones.
-
Just come across this Carte de Visite whilst sorting my old photos into date order and thought I would email a copy to the restaurant but...:
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-for-sale/property-25280742.html
I did finally get a response from the person that I emailed a copy to after a bit of prompting..and he said that he was researching for a friend and that the online tree wasn't his...he would let me know when his friend had received the copy...haven't heard from him since.
I will go there one day and take the photo to show the next owners!!
Carol
-
I have passed it many times, but never been in. Isn`t it annoying when people don`t respond, especially after all the work that has been done.
-
You never know...raising it again might just flush out some relatives ;D
Thanks for all your help.
