Title: ELI CLARKE
Post by: BOJANGELS2 on Monday 07 July 14 22:44 BST (UK)
hi, I have an eli Clarke born wotton under edge 1826 -to Robert Clarke and sarah croome , there was also a brother George born 1831 , I have ELI in the 1841 census ,but no George , I also have a death certificate for a George Clarke 1838 , no parents names ,I also have a write up on the death from a local newspaper -again no parents names ,just George clarkes death by accidental burning -----I cannot find ELI in 1851 census at all, or anytime after in the years to follow , however I have a George Clarke born in wotton under edge, joining the army in 1853  ,fathers name Robert Clarke --I know this to be my great grandfather as ive followed him on through his army papers and his marriage to mary holloran ,and then to widnes Lancashire where his children were born , does anyone know if it would have been possible that George died in the fire and ELI took on georges name and lived as George , in later years the said George called his first son George eli -- if im wrong -is there anyway anyone else can find an ELI CLARKE born in 1826 anywhere at all , I would be over the moon , thanks in advance ,

A tree on Ancestry has all the details for George Clarke married to Mary Holloran with all the details that you mentioned along with copies of marriage certificate  ...and army records but they have his parent's down as Robert & Betty Clarke which could possibly be wrong ..The question is what George were you talking about that died in the fire ?
There are a few Eli Clarke's on the England and Wales criminal records one transported to Tasmania in 1848 maybe worth checking

ROSIE17 , thanks for the reply ,yes I have Robert and betty on my tree as parents but I know now that they are the wrong ones --I did have the incorrect family line ,but im back now into wotton under edge looking for the family as that's where George is supposed to have come from , its really George Clarke im looking for but as I cant find proof of him anywhere ,im having to eliminate any family of clarkes who have a son called George in them , that's where eli comes in, I have a Robert Clarke married to a sarah croom with a George and an eli in , I also have a death of a George Clarke aged 7 burnt to death in 1838 which matches my George ,but I need to know which family that unfortunate  George came from as if his parents were Robert and sarah Clarke then that's obviously the wrong family again , --I will get there its just there are so many George clarkes in wotton under edge --where do I find the info on eli Clarke as a criminal please thank you -bo

Hi a bit confused here is the George you have the brother of Eli ? and the problem is you can't find him with the family in 1841 census noting the father Robert is not there also .....Do you have access to Ancestry.. as this is where I seen the records but note no information other than the crime again this is just  speculation ...Most library's have Ancestry where you can view these records

hi rosie ,yes there is a eli and a George belonging to a Robert and sarah Clarke of wotton under edge -ive traced all their children bar eli and George -I dont know if this is my family im looking for or not but its the only family I can find with a father Robert and a son called George ---I know in later life my grandfather called himself George eli and he also called his son George eli, which makes me think this may be the correct family , but whats throwing me is I have a death of a George Clarke aged 8  in wotton in 1838 ,-the poor child burned to death whilst his parents were at work,i need to eliminate this George as if I can do this ,then I think im still on the right track ---however as there was no parents name on his death record or in the newspaper report I have no idea how I can find out who he belonged to ---if he belonged to Robert and sarah Clarke and brother to eli then im on the wrong family for me as obviously my George was still alive ---im so confused -I just need a new thought on it from someone to maybe help me see things in a different light ,BO xx

Hi did you manage to find the parents in other census forms ? there was a death for a Sarah Clark 1842 Dursley Gloucester ....There was a George Clark born about 1827 Wotton Under edge in the 1851 census with a wife Elizabeth and a son Richard ....Is this George yours George Elias Clarke marriage 1857 Registration district Newport Pagnell ...I think maybe you will need to find out where they hold the church records for Dursley Chapel Methodist Gloucester and see if you can find anything ...this was the church where the children were baptised

sorry rosie forgot to add my George joined the army in the 45th and  59th reg , he was in south Africa in the 1861 census and he married mary holloran in galway on the 26th september  1866 , I have their wedding certificate , he later came to widnes Lancashire and had George eli ,mary kate ,john Robert and then mary ended up in the workhouse in prescot and gave birth to my grandfather  james Clarke in 1877 .--George was lost again after 1874 when his last known address was 20 Cromwell street widnes ---so I have all his life except his birth and first few years and then his death

rosie ,they certainly don't , I had this info years ago and dismissed it as I thought the George in this family had been burnt to death --not realising there were so many damn George clarkes in wotton ,lol, then I followed the wrong lead and got pally with someone who thought we were related , found out het George and Robert are deffo not mine ,so I went back to the beginning --I just need to find him ,don't know why ,but he wont leave me alone lol x

thanks craclyn, ive just been thinking (takes me a long time ) lol, my family of clarkes lived in widnes in 1874 at 29 Cromwell street , then mary the wife and mother ended up in prescot union workhouse in 1877 ,im wondering if maybe the family moved nearer to the docks eg Wirral area -to find work - if that was the case im looking in the wrong place for georges death , what catchment area would prescot union workhouse take people in from -do you know ?

I am no expert on that area, but from the following sentence "WIDNES, a town, a township, and a chapelry, in Prescot parish, Lancashire" in the genuki link I gave you, I would guess that Prescot Union Workhouse was in Prescot parish.

The Ancestry one is clearer. When you click on image, you are on the wrong page and need to go to next page- that is page 46.
You can then see Robert Clarke but it is Norwich page 154. I would say it is a transcription error.

The Stroud entry on freebmd has page 154. You can find it by filtering on name Robert Clarke and dates 1838.

The Stroud entry on freebmd has page 154. You can find it by filtering on name Robert Clarke and dates 1838.

It gives that but the image reads Norwich.

if it is a error does that mean on the person who has copied the details out and it could be the Robert Clarke I want
sorry to sound thick ,I struggle to understand it

so if I order a death certificate which numbers do I give them as when I ordered  a nother certificate they ask the page and volume numbers

I can only tell you what I see.
Viewing the image on both Free BMD and Ancestry shows the same.

It is clearer on Ancestry but I can see it says Robert Clarke Norwich Pg 154

The number is feint and It is understandable that it has been interpreted as 44 but it looks to be  154.

Have you looked at the image?

I don't think there is a death for Stroud.

If you are sure you have a Robert Clarke who died in Gloucestershire, I think Craclyn gave you a Cheltenham death.

Do you know when he died? He might have died before civil registration began.

hewood im clutching at straws -I know he lived in wotton under edge as he married and had his children there ,but I couldn't find him in the 1841 census and a friend told me they found this death but the reg office couldn't find it -so I don't know whether I have to try Gloucester or Norwich now for the certificate ---im not sure its even him but there was a parish recording in wotton for a Robert Clarke so I thought I would try for the cert and see what itt gives me

hi, does anyone know if I can get a coronors report of a childs death in 1838 in wotton under edge Gloucestershire uk . ,the coroner signed the death certificate but I want to know the parents names if possible --I have his death certificate ,I also have the newspaper cutting  ,but it gives no fathers or mothers names just a man and his wife named Clarke were at work when the incident happened
