Title: Bit baffled n in need of help please?
Post by: Carla ingham on Friday 11 July 14 02:13 BST (UK)
Hi, i am completely new and confused by this so was hoping I could get some help, I'm trying to find out what happened to my great grandfather, my grandad left home at 13 and never heard from his dad since, and is desperate to find out what happened to him,  I have dates and names of great great relatives I would also like to find out about. I read this site has helped a few people, so hoping it can do the same for me.
Thank you for any help  :)

Hello Carla,
   Welcome to rootschat  :)  :)

I'm sure you will get lots of help here.

One rule is that you shouldn't mention people who are living (or may be living) on this forum.  So if you are not sure if your Great Grandad is still alive (and he would be under 105) then do not mention his name.

Perhaps start with the names and dates of your great great relatives.

regards,
   Ros

A warm welcome to Rootschat.

If you start by giving the names (and any other details such as where they may have lived, who they married and so on) of ancestors who would have been adults at the time of the 1911 census you will find a host of rootschatters happy to help search sideways and back into the past.

Once you have posted a few messages you will be able to use the private message function to start enquiring about your great grandfather.

All the best
Philip

Thanks guys, well here's what I know so far, my great grandfather is called William Harker (his dad Ralph Harker) married great grandmother Alice Priestley b 1889
Alice Priestley's mum - Eliza Glossop (b1866)  - married Sam Priestley
Eliza Glossop's mum - Bridget Glossop.
I think they lived around the Haworth area in West Yorkshire
What other kind of info or advice would be useful?
Thanks again in advance

Looking for children of the couple on FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
it gives 2  Harker births whose mother's surname was Priestley-Phyllis b June 1916 North Bierley and Cyril b Sept 1920 Keighley.
You can use FreeBMD to check marriages and deaths for these to see if they are your relatives and what became of them. There are possible marriages in W Yorkshire for both of them. Use the help pages to help you with your searches-you'll find it a very useful site.
There are no records after 1983 so if they died after this time (which they probably have)you won't find them

Looks like either

Alice Harker (born approx. 1889) died in Bradford W Yorks Mar 1976 or
Alice Harker (born approx. 1889) died in Staincliffe Yorkshire West Riding March 1974

Welcome Carla  :)

William was 22 when he married Alice on 20 Feb 1915. He was a borer, of 4 Wren St, Haworth.  His father Ralph, a wool comber, was already deceased.  Witnesses were Harold and Louie Whalley.

You may already have all this but in any event it will help us to help you if William's birthdate can be found.

Thanks yes that's right about Cyrill and Phyllis,  this is so interesting finding out about my family history, what other kinda things is it possible to find about them? How far back could my tree be traced? Any other info I can provide helping to find out William Harker? I know he's deceased just wanted to know all about his life after 1924-5?

Hallo, Carla

Civil registration of births, marriages and deaths began in 1837 but there are church records going back to the 16th century.  If records survive you could trace your family back to Shakespeare's time; if you come across any noble ancestors you could get back as far as the Norman conquest!

Census records are available from 1841 to 1911 which would fill in details of your ancestors and their siblings.

After 1911 the search would rely on newspapers, electoral registers, trade directories and a variety of other records.

The last known address and occupation of William Harker would be a good starting point.  Alternatively, if we can track down when he died we could work backwards.

All the best
Philip

I know absolutely nothing about him apart from his birthday was 3 jan 1892-3 think 93

That is very important information.  What is the source for it - is there a document or is it a family memory?

A birth on 3 Jan 1893 would be consistent with his being 22 when he married in February 1915.

William Harker, birthdate given as 3 Jan 1894, died Sep qtr 1976 in Pontefract.

This would fit a FreeBMD entry for William Harker birth registered Mar qtr 1894 Keighley vol 9a p203.
There is a death registered for Ralph Harker age 66 Dec qtr 1908 Keighley vol 9a p139
Haworth was in the registration district of Keighley.

To add to the family data a 1901 census lookup for Ralph and William seems the sensible next step.

I entirely agree.  There is also a marriage for a Ralph Harker in Keighley Sep qtr 1892 to Margaret Ann Hillary or Susannah Ince.  The other man on the page was George Ratcliffe.  I have tried and failed to find a suitable couple in 1901.
