Post by: Jessies Mum on Monday 14 July 14 23:19 BST (UK)
Death Certificate shows he was 60 years old when he passed away.  Parents unknown, other than surname of Reeves according to death certificate.  Died 23 August 1972 in South Melbourne.  Two marriages (both women deceased).  First marriage in Sydney, NSW in 1934 to Florence E Holland which ended in divorce.  Second marriage in Yarraville, Vic in 1954 to Marjorie Jean Williams.  Cannot locate any information about this man prior to his first marriage.

On his death certificate it states:
"Roderick Thornley REEVES known as Conyers Joseph REEVES"

That is the only certificate I have a copy of.

Regarding his divorce, this link shows the name of Roderick:

The only Conyers REEVES that I can see on the electoral rolls is
1954
Conyers Joseph W REEVES
, Repatriationo General Hospital, Heidelberg (Vic), orderly.

No other persons of that surname at that address.

So there are two Conyers Joseph Reeves!?  ???

No, only one - Roderick & Conyers were brothers.

Your Roderick Thornleigh/Thornley REEVES obviously assumed/used his younger brother's name/s hence the reason for his death certificate showing 'known as' & both names are noted because at some stage in his life he had used those names. I have seen siblings/family members do this before for various reasons.

There are 3 births on the NSW BDM to the same parents all brothers, all born Paddington in different years.

1909 Samuel E REEVES #6896
1912 Roderick T REEVES #7856
1913 Conyers J REEVES #20596
Parents: David E & Elsie M

Conyers Joseph William REEVES b. 1913 d. 1979 NSW.
He married Kathleen Audrey GREENMAN 1938 in NSW as William REEVES.
Conyers Joseph William & Kathleen Audrey REEVES appear on the ERolls together in NSW until his death.
Most of the NSW ERolls have him listed as William REEVES except for one which has him as Conyers Joseph William REEVES 1963 at ROZELLE - obviously he preferred the name William.

His death notice is under William REEVES in the newspaper:

REEVES William age 66yrs d. 13 May 1979 late of Rozelle.
Sydney Morning Herald 15 May 1979

His death registration on the NSW BDM:

REEVES Conyers Joseph William 1979 #10333 - Parents: David & Elsa

There's also  1907  Sydney McD Reeves #20249 registered Sydney (but WWII records show he listed birthplace as Paddington) parents "Edward D" and "Elsie M".

If this is of the same family, perhaps father is the "Edward D" who died in 1914 in Sydney?

Also quite interesting David Frederick Bernard Reeves who signed up in 1915 for WWI, aged 18 - mother listed as Elsie Reeves, location of birth Sydney.  His marriage in the UK is also in the file and lists his father as "David Reeves, Inspector Tramway Constructure (deceased)".  This would match up with "E.D. Reeves" who died in 1914 in terms of occupation:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/15525714?searchTerm="E. D. Reeves"

I cannot find a matching birth under David.  There is a 1972 death for a Frederick David Reeves, father Edward David, mother Margaret Ellen.

This would then link this family to Edward D. and Margaret E. (nee Schultz) who married in 1894, and  had a number of children including a "Frederick D. B." of the right time to be the man who in WWI lists his mother as Elsie.  The last child listed with mother as "Margaret" is in 1904 (when they were in St. Leonards), after which we have Edward D. and Elsie M having a child in 1907, and then David E. and Elsie M having a few more children.

So interesting but not proven - the war records are the nicest link as it shows fairly strongly that the boy with mother Elsie and father David (deceased), Tramway Inspector, WWI is probably the same as the boy  born with parents Edward D. and Margaret E, and "Edward D." being the Tramway Inspector who died in 1914.

What is less clear is if "Margaret Ellen Schultz" and "Elsie nee ???" are the same woman.  The birth record for Roderick in 1912 would clear things up, of course.

Merlin thank you sincerely for the clarification around this all, makes everything so much easier and clearer now.

Jorose thank you also for all of the war record information - has been a very interesting family!

Thanks everyone for completing this for me, so much appreciated  ;D
