Title: Marriage look-up request
Post by: eial on Friday 18 July 14 13:21 BST (UK)
Marriage William STYLES to Wilmot NEPEAN ON 16 Dec 1792 at St. Stephens by Saltash.
I have found a marriage transcription by Cornwall FHS on Findmypast.    My query is - would the original parish entry give details of Wilmot's father ?
Also does anyone know if the name Wilmot could be used for a boy as well as girl ?   I was looking at two possible birth transcriptions for Wilmot but one gave the gender as boy not girl.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks.

Marriage records before 1 July 1837 (beginning of civil registration) do not routinely record a father's name - there is no specific box or space for it.  Occasionally the name might be entered but by no means guaranteed.

Wilmot is both a boy's name and a girl's name - much like Leslie ;D

Thank you Nell and KGarrad for your replies.   That has helped me sort out two possible baptism entries.

Thank you Mo and Trish for all that information.   I feel sure now that the Wilmot Nepean baptized January 1868 is female and not male as recorded on the transcript available on Findmypast.  It ges a bit confusing when different branches of the  family feature the same name.    I will also use the contact  suggested by Mo for further information.
Many thanks.

Hello Colleen - sorry to piggyback on your question but Wilmot Nepean/William Styles are my ancestors (via their daughter Lavinia Styles) & I wondered whether you were also interested in Lt. William Styles & whether you had managed to find out (a) anything about his parents (who I currently assume were probably <someone> Styles and Mary Southgate and (b) anything about William Bedingfield Styles. As far as I can tell, William and Wilmot may have had a son around 1813 called William Henry (never married), so I assume William Bedingfield may have died young.

Thanks also to all the other contributors in this thread.

Since your request for information on Wilmot Nepean  something rather exciting happened.  Saltash Heritage were given almost 200 documents regarding the Nepean family going back to the late 1700s.  There are family trees, personal letters and other documents - they were a family who thought they should be of a higher class than they were.  A different female Wilmot Nepean was baptised in 1567 - if my memory serves me right - under the surname Nanpian The names were carried down through the family so I suspect your Wilmot was related to these Nepean.
Myself and other volunteers have been transcribing the documents as they are a fascinating insight into Victorian life and they are now all typed ready for sorting chronologically.
If you would like more information on the Nepean family please contact me via Saltash  Heritage.
