Hello
I have a quick query. I like many struggle to get records on family after before 1901.
Would family member have put notices in the Derry Journal, and if so are the searchable?
I also have part of the family who moved to Scotland - I know (6th sense) that they are related to my tree but can't get the link into my family as I'm missing the father link. If anyone has any thoughts on getting past this block i would greatly appreciate it.

What sort of notices are you looking for? In general, birth notices are quite rare and usually only gentry or tradespeople put such in the paper. Marriages a bit more common and deaths occupy the most space in the announcements. The social status and literacy of a family can determine in they would have paid for an announcement. It also depends on the individual family- I checked for notices for several well-to-do ones and found nothing but I do know that they had death letters printed and delivered to relatives, neighbours and friends so likely thought nothing else was needed.
I've not seen the Derry Journal online anywhere.
Added- if you are able to find a newspaper notice the details will be minimal. Here are 3 examples:
Birth Londonderry Sentinel, 25 Dec.1857: At Tullyhoe, Newtownlimavady, on the 19th inst., the wife of Mr. William Brown, of a daughter.
Marriage Londonderry Sentinel, 1862: On Thursday, the 6th inst., in Great James Street Presbyterian Church, by the Rev. Robert Ross, Mr. John Clements, to Maggie, second daughter of the late Mr. Samuel Milligan, of this City, printer.
Death Londonderry Sentinel, 1861: At Ballykelly, on Friday, the 24th inst., Margaret, wife of Mr. Thomas Clements, aged 75 years.

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking more for death notices than anything else. I've been told they can be accessed on microfilm at the library so I might as well give it a go. Not much to lose, at present I have very little else to go on :)

I'm looking for a David Diver born c.1860 in Derry as recorded on census. He lived in the Lecky Road and married Catherine "Cassie Lynch" 14/08/1888 in Derry. His father was recofded as John Diver. But that is all the information available. I've checked GRONI for birth certs as well as the civil registration but no way of confirming it without mother's name. Any ideas where to go from here?

Hi,
The birth occurred before registration started in Ireland(1864). However there was a baptism in the Long Tower Roman Catholic Church in Londonderry of a David Diver, father John Diver and mother Sarah McKeown on 4 Aug 1860.

You possibly have found what has taken me about 4 months of searching! Can I ask where you were able to access the church records? My ancestry monthly subscription just isnt doing it :)

A possible problem. I have just looked up the marriage and found that John Diver married Sarah McGOWAN in the Long Tower Roman Catholic Church on 1 Dec 1841. The mother's name may be a transcription error on one of the records.

I've noted 3 other births now as well to john diver and mckeown from long tower.
