Hi I'm hoping that someone will have a better idea how to search for this lady. Baptised 18/12/1835 in Poole, Dorset. Daughter of James Bush 1817 who is believed to have served on HMS Oberon but little prof. Mother Sarah but also not found. Sarah Adaline was found in 1851 census as niece living with her uncle John Laundrey still in Poole.
Please can someone help with this family tree as I don't know what to do next. Really want to find if Sarah married and had any children. Also if her father was on the Oberon.
Many thanks
Heidi

Sarah Adaline was found in 1851 census as niece living with her uncle John Laundrey still in Poole.
Hi
Is she not the Sarah A Bush, 15 b Poole, enumerated as a niece of John Bush (hairdresser, 38 b Devonport) in 1851? (I see from other records that he had middle name Laundrey).
-
Hi
Yes that's her but no other records found
-
Where did you get the year of birth for her dad James from, plus the idea he may have been on the Oberon?
I see from Familyseach that there was a Richard James chr 1837 in Poole, also parents John and Sarah - likely a brother?
-
Here I think she is in 1841, with her brother in Poole
Philis Adams 50 - mariner's wife, not born in county
Sarah Bush 6 - born in county [Ancestry have transcribed as Burt]
Richard Bush 5 - not born in county
Ref HO107, 294, 10, 5
Richard James is baptised in Poole, 23 August 1837 to James and Sarah - James a sailmaker, as in Sarah's baptism. he marries in 1862 - no obvious Bush connected witnesses.
In 1861 he's living with his uncle John Bush the hairdresser, along with Philis Adams, who is listed as mother-in-law
-
have just realised Philis is with John and Sarah A in 1851, when she is a visitor, not mother-in-law, so wonder if she is related to Sarah and Richard's mother? She's born Devonport and Richard was born Portsea, so some obvious naval bases there.

I just saw that as well - have been trying to track family to see if Sarah is about with them.

I was going to answer but you are all doing a fantastic job. I'm finding relatives for a friend as we are both Bush descendants. He is descended from James and his son Richard is a great grandfather. Richard was in the navy along with his cousin Augustus Jefford Bush (son of John L). I did see Philis Adams but didn't know the link. Thank you for that and the 1841 census. Can't find it on Ancestry but will look again.
Thank you very much

I've found the census now. Still no sign of Sarah Adaline.
Oh well thanks everyone.

Possible marriage for Sarah Adaline's parents.
October 1835
James Bush to Sarah Waldon
Sarah is from Christchurch.
James from Poole
Daughter perhaps with Mother's family ?

Just found on Ancestry, a list of officers and seamen and marines, on HMS Oberon receiving medals for the Crimea.
There is a James Bush age 26, Rank AB.
R (?received) 10th Nov 1855
That would make him born 1829/30, so unlikely to be the one fathering Sarah Adeline in 1835.
-
Hi thank you for your research. James Bush was not 26. That's the No on Ships book. Some sailors are 2 or 5.
I did find Sarah Walden but she would have been 14 for her first child. Still possible but I'm just not sure. Could explain her disappearance from the children because she married someone later.
-
Apologies for error. I shouldn't try and do two things at once.
-
Not at all. Very nice of you to search for me. I've ordered a marriage certificate for Sarah today as I think your right.
Many thanks

Re the James Bush on HMS Oberon, 'R' means 'Run' i.e. deserted, together with the date he ran.

-
Oh dear. Does that mean he was hung? How would I find out details pls?
-
It is highly unlikely that he suffered any penalty. Many men deserted, this could be a deliberate act or just getting drunk and missing the sailing of the ship, both would be recorded as 'run'. In many instances men signed on in another ship later in their careers, and if the 'run' was found it could be removed from their record with the Admiralties approval, entitling a man to a pension, so not quite so bad as it sounds!

Hi Martin,
I don't actually know if this is the correct James Bush as don't know this sailors age. I guess National archives could hold something as I can't find much at all on HMS Oberon or where it visited. Just know he would have got a medal in 1855 if not an "r". I can't find any James Bush that fits after so think he probably died. Tree research is so frustrating! Sarah Adaline was never found either.
Thanks for your info. Much appreciated.
