Title: HAMMOND family, "went to America"...........
Post by: minniehaha on Tuesday 22 July 14 04:24 BST (UK)
Hello from New Zealand.........

I would like to obtain some details of the family of Thomas HAMMOND (1824 - 1909) & Miriam nee Hodnet(t). In particular of those who "went to America". All seven of their children were born at Mahorall, in Shropshire (UK).

Three are known to have emigrated to "America". The following information was discovered in the 1980's. I have no idea as to its accuracy.

1.Miriam Rhoda HAMMOND, born 1859. Married Richard Cadwallader WILLIAMS.
2.Thomas Edwin HAMMOND, born 1862.
3.Herbert Hodnett HAMMOND**, born 1864. Said to have married Emma..........

**His one known son, Kepler Vanfleet HAMMOND++, (marine officer now detective in a sheriffs office.)
**His one known daughter, Margaret Elaine.

++ A Google search of this name has led me to the "Find a Grave" website which provides his obituary. Whether this is the same man, son of Herbert Hodnett HAMMOND, I do not know.

I am hoping someone may be able to help fill in a number of the many gaps.

Hello New Zealand,
I found a Herbert Hammond in the 1910 US Census, living in Missouri and married to an Emma. He was born in England and his age puts his birth year at about 1866.

At that point, Herbert has 2 children, Arthur K, 19, born in West Virginia and Herbert E, 17, born in New York.

Moving forward to the 1930 US Census, Arthur K Hammond (born in West Virginia), shows Kepler V Hammond listed as his son and they lived in Pueblo, Colorado.  Kepler V was born in Colorado in 1925.

I hope this is a connection. You can find more on Familysearch.org, which is free.

Good Luck.

The birth of Arthur Kepler Hammond to Herbert H Hammond and Emma Ebrecht 23 Sept 1890 Alderson-Monroe, Greenbrier, West Virginia gives Emma's maiden name.

Wow!! I am very impressed with all the information found.

Thanks to cfdm for your input. And an especially big thank you to Sandra as you have put in a huge effort. Not to mention all that typing! At this point you know more about the families than I do.

However I have printed off all the information to absorb in quiet moment. And there is a great deal to get my head around.

At the outset I mentioned that Kepler Van Fleet HAMMOND was stated to be the son of Herbert Hodnett HAMMOND. He was obviously the grandson.

I have e-mailed the cemetery where he was buried, in the hope that I may obtain a little more information about his four sons. Not likely I know, but one can only try.

Again, my very grateful thanks.............  :)  :)

Hello again,

On going through the responses, I note in Reply #5 that the head of the house (husband) 1900 census, was one Edward C. Williams.

In the 1905 census the head of the house (husband) was Richard C. Williams. This presumably was the Richard Cadwallader Williams mentioned in my first post. Should Edward have been Richard; a transcription error?

Hi,

You're very welcome, pleased the info helped fill some gaps.

You mention the 1900 census saying Edward C Willliams. If you look at the 1900 Census image the name of Mr Williams is over-written but if I were transcribing I would say it said Richard. The record on ancestry has been altered to read Richard, the family search one obviously hasn't.

The Obituary for Kepler Vanfleet Hammond names the children.  Using the names and locations given in conjunction with http://www.whitepages.com/ - spokeo - people finder and sites like those, you should be able to locate all who are listed.

I can confirm that in reply 16 - I referred to the death notice for Miriam Jane Amish in 1957 being on the http://www.fultonhistory.com/fulton.html - the marriage you have found is another bonus. The site is very good and you may find lots of info related to your families.

Thank you for your response Sandra.

You have probably guessed by now that I am not all that au fait with things related to computers ::)..........

Using the website as shown, I have tried without success to find the death in 1957 of Miriam Jane Amish. Not sure where I am going wrong. (I did however find the death of Thomas Edwin Hammond during my search, so that was a bonus.)

I have located the death for Miriam! A case of "less is more". I finally went for just 'Miriam Amish' (took out Jane) and found the date of her death, not an actual obituary.

Reply #15 re the 1930 census concerning Minnie HAMMOND-

I am puzzled as to why Barbara Amish & Lois Amish; both grand-daughters, are shown as deceased.

Hello,

I know this is an old thread, but I came across it when I was searching for information about my grandfather's military service record. My grandmother is Miriam Elizabeth Williams Small, and her father is Richard Cadwallader Williams.

My middle name is Cadwalader, which I understood to be a family name. I believe the extra "l" was dropped by accident.

Enjoyed the thread!

Hello JCS and welcome to Rootschat!  :)

As you say, this is an old thread and I will need to refresh my memory but the names you mention are certainly familiar.

If you post two more replies, even just using a smiley  :), we will be able to correspond by the personal message system.

I hope we can swap information. I live in New Zealand and am the great-great-grand-daughter of Charles Hammond, born 1818, a brother of Thomas Hammond. Both born Bewdley, Worcestershire.

Looking forward to hearing from you.....
