Title: Rosa Christine JEFFRIES
Post by: SPARHAM on Tuesday 22 July 14 21:48 BST (UK)
 ???
Hello, I have a big brick wall. my 2 x great aunt Rosa married a John Briscoe (of whom I can find nothing).   They had a daughter Emily born 27 Oct 1856 in Denbigh Street London SW1.  She died in an asylum in 1925 (Canterbury, Kent).  A shot in the dark but I think John and Rosa would have married around 1856.  I can find nothing in the 1861 census.  However in the 1871 census onwards she is the Head of the House, in the 1911C she is living in Hampstead through her own means.

I have scrolled through the IGI and can only find Emily's christening details (she was christened on 31 Oct 1858 (sic) - possibly a typing error, at St Anne's Soho, Westminster England.  Rosa left about £6000 when she died in 1918 in Hampstead so it certainly looks as if she married into money.

If anyone can help I would be grateful.  You have helped me so much in the past when I have got stuck.

Kind Regards

SPARHAM

They could have married abroad or not married at all.

She disappears on 1861 census which raises questions, by 1871 she is a widow with servants living in a high end part of London. Traveller on the baptism does not say 'money', I think this one may stay hidden!

Unfortunately the census returns for Pimlico & Belgravia in 1861 do not survive.  Rosa, Emily and (possibly) John are missing then - also missing it seems are Rosa's mother Fanny (with her in 1871) and her brother Walter Thorn Jeffries who went on to marry at St George Hanover Square in 1864.  It may be that they were all together or near one another in 1861, in the area covered by the missing census pieces.

Added: also apparently missing in 1861 are

Rosa's brother John Seaman Jeffries (b abt 1832 Stradbroke) who had married Sarah Catherine Beasley, Pancras, Jun qtr 1856.

Rosa's sister Fanny (Whitehead) Jeffries (b abt 1829 Stradbroke) who went on to marry George Wilson in Pimlico in 1869.

It would be interesting if the Elizabeth Mahan b abt 1867 Hackney enumerated in 1871 as Rosa's niece could be traced (if she has not already been traced).

If she is a niece on Rosa's side then she would not take matters further, but if she is a niece on John's side that would provide a link to him.
