Title: Help to identify a word on an Irish birth record.
Post by: annypanny on Wednesday 23 July 14 14:17 BST (UK)
Hi can anyone help recognise this word.  It is on a birth from Lisnaskea Ireland 1884.  The word appears under the date of birth, the father's name and the father's signature (although he signed with an X).  To me the word looks like Cluiafor!  Any help would be appreciated.

Annie

It should be the townland where the birth took place, though I cannot identify that specific place in the usual lists of Irish townlands. Someone with local knowledge may be able to help.

Many thanks, hopefully someone with local knowledge will recognise the name...

Although the dot of the 'i' is slighlty out of place, it looks to me as if it could be Clinagor townland which lies in the Parish of Drummully, County Fermanagh (parts of the Parish are in County Monaghan).

Other spellings for the townland I have come across include Clinagore, Clonagor and Clonnagore (as mentioned in my post at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=153019.0 ).

Can you share the surname from the birth record?

No obvious Stinson entries for that townland in 1901 and 1911 (where it is recorded under County Monaghan), albeit I still think it is the most likely. Did your Stinson line move elsewhere that you know of?

Hi, I know the name was recorded as Steenson and Stentson too.....part of the family moved to Scotland late 19th century.

Thanks

I can confirm the civil birth record states "Clinagor" which as mentioned earlier (above) is a variant of the actual townland named Clonnagore, in the parish of Drummully - which coincidentally is where my ancestors lived for 50+ years 😎
