Title: Surname...Juddery
Post by: finnisfinder on Wednesday 30 July 14 13:39 BST (UK)

I have just come across this surname; a number living in Ash.

But more puzzling a Christian name which has appeared in varying spelling.

Eoffry Juddery married John Debock 27th July 1775 at Ash.

After John's death in 1791 at Sandwich,  Eoffry, then known as Afra married John Knight 12th May 1793 Sandwich. On one transcription was written as Affrey. Sometimes Afia.

I'm wondering if the name had been so badly written that it was difficult to transcribe. If that was the case wonder what her name was?

Any ideas?

Could it have been Eiofe?

Canterbury baptisms have it as Affrey Jeddery - the image is hard to read though :)

Done a lot of transcribing and Afra was a girl's name back then though with different spellings depending on the cleric's ability to spell and the accent it was pronounced with.

 Thanks for your help.

I was searching online, came across two Affreys! Not connected to me though.
