Title: William MOFFAT - Annan
Post by: cupcake on Friday 01 August 14 18:12 BST (UK)
My 3x G Grandfather William MOFFAT was a Blacksmith in Annan and married to Christina Fraser in Annan 1796. As there are no death entries for Annan before 1855, I haven't been able to find their death entries or burial place.

There is  however, a headstone in the Old Annan Burial ground, for a William MOFFAT  Blacksmith. He was married to a Janet IRVING. This William died 1848 and Janet 1851.  I would like to know if there is any connection to my 3x GG Grandfather.

My 3XGrandfather had 3 brothers -John b.1763 - George b. 1775  and James b. 1778 who died April 1820. Had thought perhaps they had married  and were a Blacksmith. So far can't make the connection.

If anyone can help or, has any information, It would be very much appreciated

There is an 1841 entry for Annan for a William Moffat blacksmith married to a Jannet/Janet and he is 50yrs old.  Allowing for the rounding process on the 1841 he would have been born between 1787-1791 so cannot be a child of the 1796 marriage

CaroleW,

Thank you that and explaining to me. Have been doing this search for a while and my brain is almost mush.

I was thinking more of my 3xG Grandfather's brothers, who perhaps married and became a Blacksmith:
John b.1763 - George b. 1775  and James b. 1778 who died April 1820.

Surely any link to the 3 brothers would be the same link to your 3xG grandfather

The William Moffat who died 1848 was born between 24 & 28yrs after John b 1763 so cannot be their father

Apart from the occupation - what kind of link do you think there is to your Moffats?

Sorry to have confused you. Was just hoping to have made a connection.

It appears I was one the wrong track, thinking one of my William’s brothers would marry and have a son, William- nephew to my William.

Was just a thought and thanks for your help.

Was thinking if the John MOFFAT b. 1763 had married and, had a son William, about 1784 then perhaps this could have been the William MOFFAT, who died 1848.

The connection then, to my GGG Grandfather -  would have been his nephew.

Since I put completed on this post and spent a few years searching for my GGG Grandparents William Moffat and Christina Fraser's death details. I have received the following information.

William MOFFAT died on 11 January 1848 in Carlisle, Cumbria, Cumberland.
Christina Fraser  died in March 1846 in Carlisle, Cumbria, Cumberland.

I have looked up the Annandale People in the Carlisle Newspapers for their Death Intimations for 1775 - 1858  and  1812 - 1858 without any joy.

Could anyone advise me where else to look.
