Title: Fire at the Coach & Horses, Hilsea 2nd October 1870
Post by: silaswall on Sunday 03 August 14 16:40 BST (UK)
Does anyone know if there are pictures of the original Coach & Horses before it burnt down in 1870? I have found descriptions of it. Also, are there any of the replacement that opened in 1871. I have found some dated 1910. This pub was further south than the original. My 2x great grandfather ran both of these at various times. He also ran a private bus service from the 1871 building. Before he went bankrupt for the 4th time! Thank you.

This

is an 1895 book The Portsmouth Road and it's Tributaries by Charles G Harper illustrated by the author and with old-time prints and pictures. It includes a picture of the Coach and Horses page 299 which looks nothing like the present one or the 1910 one. I imagine the 1910 pub was the replacement built after the fire as the wikepedia entry says the current one was built in c1930
