W.H.E. was born on 7 April 1875, in Leigh. He died in Atherton on 28 August 1919.
Looking for information on this guy beyond the routine record.
Would love to speak to living relatives (or anyone else for that matter) who have any interesting anecdotes they'd like to share.

Hi George
Have you tried looking in surname interests under Eckersley - there are several people researching in the Lancashire area - it's at the bottom of the page under your tools :)
-
Thanks for that. There are few members looking into Eckersley families, but not the ones I want.
Cheers,
George.

Why not try the local papers then? http://www.leighjournal.co.uk
I know the Bolton News has a Looking Back section , if the Leigh paper has something similar you might get lucky.

Hello,
Did he marry and have children? If he didn't you would be wanting information from his siblings' descendants and you're going back a long time.
Do you believe he was the kind of character who would be interesting enough for anecdotes to remain 100 years later?
Do you know more about him than you have posted- WW1 maybe?

The local papers (Journal, Chronicle, Observer & Reporter) are a great resource and I've trawled over them for years at Leigh Library. I've found his obituary but little more.
The Journal has an on-line archive but it only goes back to the end of the last century and none of the local papers are stored on the British Newspaper Archive. :(
Keep the ideas coming, I'm all ears!

All good questions.
He didn't have children.
He was socially buoyant during his life being from a wealthy family and he married into the Shaw family, wealthy local brewers.
I do know some more about him but only basic stuff like residency occupation etc..

Absolutely fascinating. My great-aunt, Betsy Jane Pendlebury, married George Shaw in July 1883. Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Shaw, was born in 1888 and married Walter Herbert Eckersley. It would be good to make contact.

I will stand corrected, but I'm fairly sure that Mary Elizabeth was born 4Q 1884. The marriage to Walter was on 6 January 1904. She remarried in Bombay, after Walter's untimely death, to Reginald Vereker Prendergast on 4 October 1925.

Thank you. You are quite correct that Mary Elizabeth Shaw was born on 20th October 1884. My apologies for misquoting the year as being 1888.

I did eventually acquire a copy of the will c/w probate record. The net value of the estate was shown as £47,757 - 5s - 8d implying aggregate debt in the region of £100k. This was a very successful family of business people all being extremely wealthy in their own right. I'd welcome suggestions as to what might have been responsible for this deduction which seems somewhat anomalous.

An update.
I obtained a copy of Walter's Will and since I last posted some editions of old Leigh newspapers have been digitised in the British Newspaper Archive.
Not learned much more though. For somebody so wealthy he didn't leave many tracks!!
