Hello
Richard McKenna was born in 1860 in County Lough to James McKenna.
Who was the mother?
Also, I found Richard on an 1881 census, living in Wavertree Lancashire.
There is no sign of his father James and he is listed as a step son to the head of the household Julia McKenna. There are also two other stepsons of the same age, Thomas and John, both born in Ireland. My confusion concerns where James is and if Richard is the stepson of Julia, was Julia a second wife of James?
Any help in clearing up the confusion will be appreciated.

If he is shown as a step son to the head of the household (ie) Julia - then it follows that Julia is not his biological mother and is either a legal second wife or a common law wife
Julia appears to be shown as a widow in 1881 so have you looked for a death for James on freebmd?
Have you looked on freebmd for a marriage between James and Julia? If none found - son James aged 7 b Liverpool so a copy of his birth cert will give you Julia's maiden name and you can then check the Irish BMD records for a marriage here

The only compatible death for James McKenna if he did die in Wavertree is in 1880 aged 54

James McKenna married Julia Shaw West Derby RD Sep qtr 1872 Vol 8b Pg 908

Actually there is another possibility:
James McKenna m. Julia Dee Bolton Lancs Vol 8c Pg 403 1868
I can't see either of the originals to see James' status at the time.
