Looks as if they were living in Milford Haven.

Occupation is harder to read - Deputy something, lighterman? Have you found Edith in 1881, was she at home with her father then as that might make it clearer.

If I am following the correct family and Edith's mother is Mary Margaret -then her father died between 1861-1871 census
1861 census Mary Margaret states "husband absent in London.
They must have been of some status as they had servants etc

Maybe his occupation is "Deputy Lieutenant"???

You really need Edith may's birth cert

D.L. = Deputy Lieutenant of the County, a position more ceremonial than active at this time but non the less of great standing in the community.

Hi Owen

Thats very interesting.  Given he is living at Hazel Hill Pembrokeshire does that mean he is the Deputy Lieutenant of Pembrokeshire?  If so do you know a web address that may  enable me to obtain more information on William at all as I imagine in order for him to hold a ceremonial position there would be references to him held someplace?

I have found that his father was Robert Robertson Gentleman [no other information] but given the name is reasonably common it is very difficult to determine which is the correct father and then mother....

Regards

The executor, Arthur Evan Bowen, appears in the India Office Pension registers - Military Funds.

The entry says Colonel Bowen (retired) died 28-4-1883. His wife received an annual pension of £225 9/- from the following day, until her death on 18-11-1915. Her name was Catherine Henrietta Winifred, born 18-12- 1846.

Great finds Suz & GR2.  :)

But can anyone find William's birth or baptism supposedly around 1798 at Milford, Pembrokeshire, Wales????

From what I know his father was Robert Robertson Gentleman.

I located the baptism of possibly William's brother Bowen Robert Robertson to Robert Robertson & Lettica on 23 May 1796 at Lambston, Pembrokeshire, Wales but no luck with finding William not his mother's maiden name: it could be Bowen given Bowen Robert Robertson's first name but just supposition...  ???
