Hi, My great grandmother was called Margaret Horan, born in Westmeath 1869, in later life she is in the Belfast census as a tailoress. She married a British soldier Edward Browning who was stationed in Fermoy, her first born (my grandmother) was born in Fermoy 1893. Any information about Margaret (Maggie) or Edward Brownings earlier lives would be fantastic, thank you.

Hi There
Have you not gotten the marriage of Margaret & Edward yet ?
This would have Margaret's father's name and occupation on it !
You mentioned Fermoy BTW and Browning is not an Irish name at all . . . there is a James Edward Browning born 1892 (died in childhood) in Fermoy Cork ~ a possible earlier child than your Grandmother !
BTW Are you off to try and claim Niall Horan's millions ;D

The free index on rootsireland shows
Margaret Horan marrying Edward Browning in 1889 in Mullingar RC Church in Westmeath.
I can't find a corresponding civil record yet !
rootsireland are a pay per view site and it will cost about 4 euro to get a transcription of the church record.

I checked the free index and I'm afraid there doesn't seem to be mention of their parent's names on it ~ just NR ie Not Registered.
This is not uncommon though !

Do you have any idea of Edward's origins in England ?
Have you found him on earlier British Census ?
Do you have military records for him ?
Do you know what his father's name was ?

My great grandparents married in Mullingar in 1869 & the marriage was never registered in the civil records.

I looked on ancestry - they have 2 Edward Brownings but the military records seem to be WW1 attestations [1] Edward born in Bolton, Kent ca 1865 [2] Edward from Bradford married to Hettie Greenwood. I no longer have a findmypast subscription but their free index shows these 3:
BROWNING EDWARD 1865 — 1885 Regimental & service records Waltham, Canterbury, Kent, England
BROWNING EDWARD 1868 — 1902 Regimental & service records St Peters, Dublin, Ireland
BROWNING EDWARD 1866 — 1903 Regimental & service records Waltham, Canterbury, Kent, England.
I presume the 'place' means place of birth. These may be worth getting - margemcm59 may know Edward's regiment. We do know from the 1911 census posted by Sinann that Edward was born in England.

Hi Josey,
Sorry is this YOUR family or the original poster as you refer to them as MY Grandparent's !!!

;D ;D I was just pointing out that not all marriages [from Mullingar perhaps in particular ???] were registered in the civil records! ;)
1889 is the date of the marriage of Margaret Horan & Edward Browning, as you correctly say in reply 7. It would be good to hear if margemcm59 has any family information about Edward's service - regiment etc. - which can help tie down any military record. Perhaps the birth of one of their children was in the military births indexes - which sometimes give regiment? As far as I know, these are only on findmypast, I no longer can get information from there on subscription. These indexes are incomplete though; they relied on the efficiency & conscientiousness of the chaplain keeping & sending records.

I'm roaring laughing here Josey ~ I TOTALLY read that message wrong DUH

As we have a subscription to The TImes online, I took out the free subs to FindMyPast.
Will now look up the Military births for baby Brownings as per 1911 census!!
