Title: What was Stella Maris, Wyndham Road, Walkford, Christchurch, Hampshire, England
Post by: Westy11 on Tuesday 12 August 14 12:11 BST (UK)
Hoping for some assistance please.

William Robertson Rougham d 13 Feb 1933 at Stella Maris, Wyndham Road, Walkford, Christchurch, Hampshire, England.

Is Stella Maris the name of a house or an institution possible Catholic?  I was unable to locate it on google.

Stella Maris is Latin for Star of the Sea - one of the many titles of Mary, mother of Jesus, so it sounds like it might be Catholic - nursing home maybe?

He was Catholic - also a WWI vet and he died aged 47 at Stella Maris so just possibly he died as a result of his service in Stella Maris? ???

Does his death certificate say that he died at Stella Maris?  His probate calendar entry (as Roughan rather than Rougham) shows him as "of" that address but does not specify his place of death.

From the Probate index entry it just looks like the name of the house where he lived.

Just had a look on Google Streetmap for Wyndham Road. Most houses look as if they post date 1933, and looks like not much north of the railway bridge. Looking at Oldmaps, there doesn't seem to be much building up to the 1930s. Walkford Inn on the corner and a couple of houses on each side. Possibly Stella Maris is a house name, maybe one which took "summer paying guests"  (as my Boscombe grandmother used to call the clients of her B & B in the 1950s).

Hi my Spanish friend's husband was in the merchant navy - he stayed at a Stella Maris in Rotterdam when he was waiting for his ship in the 60s/70s.  More recently it has converted to a hotel.
Earlier this year she went back with some trainee reporters & they did an internet feature on the Stella Maris (where many Spanish stayed when in the Dutch merchant navy).
Hope this helps. :)

Thank you iem.  Much appreciated.  Interestingly and serendipitously  my grandson attends a Star of the Sea school.  It wasn't till I posted to this forum about this topic that I discovered Stella Maris also meant Star of the Sea...

Looks like it's a house name. In the 1937, 1938 and 1939 phone books that address was the residence of a Miss A G Wicke. The exchange name is Highcliffe.

Aimee Gertrude Wicke

She is on the electoral roll for Epsom, Surrey in the late 1920's (resident in Ashtead). Died in Christchurch RD in 1942.

You ask, "Is Stella Maris the name of a house or an institution possible Catholic?"

Was your person a seaman?  Many ports around the world have the Mission to Seafarers, often called 'Stella Maris'.

The Stella Maris Seafarers' centres provide pastoral care, services and support for seafaring people.  Stella Maris centres are part of the Catholic Church's official missionary work in its care of seafarers. These centres are a key component of the Apostleship of the Sea (AoS), an agency which is operated globally under the auspices of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrant and Itinerant People in Rome.  The AoS acts for the Church among the People of the Sea, ever dutiful in the service of hospitality.

Wikipedia says,
"The Apostleship of the Sea is an agency of the Catholic Church. It is also sometimes known as Stella Maris (Star of the Sea), and its patron is the Virgin Mary as Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Founded in Glasgow, Scotland in the early 20th century, it provides pastoral care to seafarers through chaplaincies in ports in all continents of the world.
AoS provides practical and pastoral care to all seafarers, regardless of nationality, belief or race. AoS port chaplains and volunteer ship visitors welcome seafarers, offer welfare services and advice, practical help, care and friendship. The Apostleship of the Sea in Great Britain is part of an international network known to the maritime world as Stella Maris, working in more than 250 ports around the world."

Hi Ramjo

I don't think William Robertson Rougham was a seaman in any form.  He was descendant of an Irish Catholic and based on the responses to my post, I am assuming now that the house/home he was at when he died was called Stella Maris.  I had wondered if it was an institution and the only instances of which I am aware that have used the name Stella Maris were institutions.  This doesnt mean someone couldn't cal their home Stella Maris I suppose.

I was researching a home some ancestors built called Bryn-Y-Mor to find out yesterday that it is now the Stella Maris convent in Swansea to I admit to being confused.

Below is the information on the Administration record for William.  William was only 49 years old when he died so it is possible he was ill and in a hospital/hospice at the end of his life.

ROUGHAN William Robertson of Stella Maris Wyndham Road Walkford Christchurch Hampshire died 13 February 1933 Administration London 22 April to Isabella Cargil Roughan widow.  Effects £572 14s 4d.
