Title: Barney O'Kane of Garvagh
Post by: wgdunphy on Wednesday 13 August 14 14:11 BST (UK)
Looking for family info, my gr grandfather was William John O'Kane, born Dec 31 1864, emigrated to US in 1885, lived in Boston, was a fireman. What I understand is his parents were Bernard "Barney" O'Kane and Elizabeth Quig, who lived in Garvagh area, their church was in Glenullin. They had 3 sons - James, Hugh, William J. and 5 daughters - Kate, Elizabeth, Sarah, Martha, Mary. Their farm was later taken over by a neighbor named Nickels. Any info on Barney and his parents etc. This is my first post. Thank you.

Thank you, there was no knowledge in my generation that William's siblings had also come to Boston.

Yes, what would you like to know?

William O'Kane, solicitor, lived at "The Hermitage" in Garvagh. He married Sarah Kerr (born 2 Sept.1876 at "Millfield" Glenkeen outside Garvagh), daughter of John Kerr & Annie Glenn. I think there were possibly 6 daughters.

I really don't know anywhere online that will give you recent details of the family. Both the O'Kanes and Kerrs were (and are) well-known locally. Is it the O'Kane side you are trying to trace?

Yes it was the okane side, it's my nanas that's needs to see if there are any leaving relatives. Her sister in law just passes away in June and my nana has been passed down her 100year old house, we though our aunt owned everything but turns old her land is lease hold and not free hold and this is where William okane comes into it his solicitors had bought alot of land and lived opposite my aunts house, but we just need to find out if he has any living relatives to find if they know about this lease hold.  :)

Lots of houses around Garvagh were leasehold rather than freehold. I doubt that the present members of the O'Kane family would know anything about Jean's bungalow but surely a solicitor should be able to sort this out.

That's what you would think :( were currently with a solicitor who's been trying to contact alot of people and she asked me to find  what ever information I could about William okane I.e death and family because it looks like he was the leaseholder, we also contacted another solicitor in Limavady who was supposed to connected martin French ingred but he said he had nothing to do with it so we're back to square one again. It's getting very frustrating :-\

Hey,

I'm not sure how old this post is. I've just seen it.  The four daughters that you are referring to you in your chat were my Granny and great Aunties.  They were Annie, Kathleen, Eileen and Claire.  I'm Eileen's grand daughter.  Happy to chat if you would like more information.

Thanks.

Emer, Dublin.

Nice to see a family member making contact - this is the beauty of Rootschat - looking forward to see if contact is made  :)
ADDED
Go to page 2 - and you will see this particular record shows the marriage of Elizabeth Quig to Bernard Kane in Garvagh, County Londonderry - NOT O'Kane ??...sorry if this makes things more confusing -  :o

Kane is just a variation of O'Kane.

Welcome to Rootschat, Emer  :)
I have lots of details about the Kerr family back to early 1700s if you are interested. Have you done any DNA tests? (at least one relative of yours has- your grandmother's 1st cousin once removed)
