Hi there

Quite a complicated blended family by the looks of it! It may take some untangling.

As I am sure you will have seen from FreeBMD, the George Rowe/Elizabeth Medland marriage took place in Tavistock district in Mar qtr 1871, so they were newlyweds in that census.

Alfred is enumerated as b c 1858-9 St Ive(s) (not Calstock) in all censuses I can find.  He seems to have married a Hannah in Lanchester district in Jun qtr 1878 and in 1881 they have a baby and also Alfred's sister Georgina Rowe, 9 b Calstock, with them.

I can't easily see Alfred in the 1861 census.  Neither he nor Emily seems to have been registered at birth as Rowe.

Do you have later records of Emily showing what her middle initial A stood for?

Beat me to it avm288, I'd just spotted that one as a possible. They were both widowed so Alfred could have been her son  :)

Yes indeed :)

Ann Lucas aged 8 can be found with Job and Susanna Lucas in Ashwater, Devon in 1841.

The parents are still there in 1851 (as Lukis) but Ann is not with them.  HO107/1896/283/12.

No, I couldn't find a marriage for Robert Medland to Elizabeth either.

The one who married Grace was a different one - that couple can be found in 1851 separately from Robert & Elizabeth.

George Rowe does not seem to have married before 1861 - in that census he is with widowed mother Ann in Menheniot.

HO107/1902/7/7.

George's likely baptism is 3 Apr 1831 at Menheniot, son of Robert & Ann.  This ties in with his father being named as Robert on the 1862 marriage - see reply #8.

I agree that Alfred's provenance is a mystery ???

This is the 1851 census, can't find him on the 1861 at the mo. when he married Ann it states that they were both widowed, so there must be another marriage somehwere???
