Hi there
Quite a complicated blended family by the looks of it! It may take some untangling.
As I am sure you will have seen from FreeBMD, the George Rowe/Elizabeth Medland marriage took place in Tavistock district in Mar qtr 1871, so they were newlyweds in that census.
Alfred is enumerated as b c 1858-9 St Ive(s) (not Calstock) in all censuses I can find. He seems to have married a Hannah in Lanchester district in Jun qtr 1878 and in 1881 they have a baby and also Alfred's sister Georgina Rowe, 9 b Calstock, with them.
I can't easily see Alfred in the 1861 census. Neither he nor Emily seems to have been registered at birth as Rowe.
Do you have later records of Emily showing what her middle initial A stood for?
-
These may or may not be relevant:
Baptised at Calstock
14 Feb 1866: Beatrice Irene Rowe & Emily Rowe, daughters of George & Ann
19 Aug 1869: Thomas George Rowe, son of George & Mary Emma (he died aged 0 in 1870)
-
On the Medland side:
Baptised at Calstock
21 Feb 1866
John Henry Medland
Ellen Ann Medland
Mary Anna Medland
Sarah Ann Medland
children of Robert & Elizabeth
-
on the 1891 census it says emma she is in cramlington from then onwards on the 1911 she is in durham and it states emily ann married name opie
i didnt know emily and alfred had a sister called georgina so thats good
her father george row is on the 1891 census as a boarder in cramlington states he is widowed ...the only time i have his second wife elizabeth on the census is on that 1871 census lol..i thought i would try this side of the family as it might be easier how wrong can one be lol

Robert Medland died Sep qtr 1865 Tavistock.
-
Robert (26) & Elizabeth (23) Medland are in Calstock in 1851 with children William 3 and George 8mo.
HO107/1901/43/16.
-
OK I think I have a candidate for "Emily"'s birth registration:
Emmeline Ann Rowe, Sep qtr 1863 Tavistock 5b 362.
-
Possible marriage for George to Emily's mother:
Married at Calstock
28 Oct 1862
George Rowe, son of Robert Rowe
Ann Lane, daughter of Job Lucas
-
Beat me to it avm288, I'd just spotted that one as a possible. They were both widowed so Alfred could have been her son :)
-
Yes indeed :)
Ann Lucas aged 8 can be found with Job and Susanna Lucas in Ashwater, Devon in 1841.
The parents are still there in 1851 (as Lukis) but Ann is not with them. HO107/1896/283/12.
-
In fact Ann "Lukis", 19 b Ashwater, is in service in Ashwater in 1851.
HO107/1896/287/21.

Baptism for Ann "Lukiss" in Ashwater, 1833:

that info is brilliant thank you so much but i cannot find the marriage of robert medland and elizabeth there are 2 marriages 1 in tavistock to a grace and the other stoke demeral? but not to an elizabeth...
-
No, I couldn't find a marriage for Robert Medland to Elizabeth either.
The one who married Grace was a different one - that couple can be found in 1851 separately from Robert & Elizabeth.

-
george rowe married anne lane 1862 in calstock 8-)
unfortunatley it looks like george was married previous to this as alfred was born prior to this marriage would you believe it x
-
George Rowe does not seem to have married before 1861 - in that census he is with widowed mother Ann in Menheniot.
HO107/1902/7/7.
George's likely baptism is 3 Apr 1831 at Menheniot, son of Robert & Ann. This ties in with his father being named as Robert on the 1862 marriage - see reply #8.
I agree that Alfred's provenance is a mystery ???
-
im really plsd he did not have another marriage where or who alfred came from has me stumped as well ...so ann lucas/lane/rowe must of died before he married elizabeth medland it gets so confusing x
-
georges mother ..roberts wife anne i have found a marriage for robert rowe and an anne buckingham in stoke dem. 1830 does this sound right x

This is the 1851 census, can't find him on the 1861 at the mo. when he married Ann it states that they were both widowed, so there must be another marriage somehwere???
