Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Can you elaborate please?  What info do you have that there was something happening in 1963?

Hi
My father died at the prison in September 1963. Information I have says that he was in instructor a nd as he spent the whole of his life concerned with the management of laundries both in the merchant navy and in the army (for which he received the BEM) I am confused as to wether he was a prisoner or employed there and can not seem to find out any further information. Any help would be appreciated.

As Styal Prison was a women's prison, opened in 1962, I would assume he was working there.

Mr Wiki has an article on the prison.

Your fathers death certificate will give you the cause of his death. If there were any suspicious circumstances to the cause it would have been reported to the coroner. If you have a copy post the cause of death and it may be possible to help more. If you don't have a copy then I suggest you order one online from the General Register Office, they are approx £10.
