Sources and Background of Data
As a base resource for UK Immigration Data : 1846 - 1851 we have relied on data available through U.S. government archives and other public resources. Please note that there may be human and/or technical errors and omissions in the data.

ps. especially interesting for irish ancestors who emigrated to the USA because of famine in Ireland:

Irish Immigrants to United States
This site contains an extensive searchable database of records on 394,616 passengers who arrived at the United States between 1846 through 1851 and identified their country of origin or nationality as Irish or Celtic.

I've now heard that these databases are mostly duplicates of those held by
NARA - National Archives
http://aad.archives.gov/aad/index.jsp
and that the NARA records are possibly more detailed.
Probably best to check with both sites :)
