Catherine HAWLEY was born in Lancashire, England in 1851.
She married John CORBETT in Victoria, Australia in 1870.
How did she get to Australia?
Thanks for reading and thanks in advance for any help.
Cheers, Ted

There is a Miss Catherine Hawley travelling with her family to Australia in 1862 on the ship "Thames".
The family look to be Richard Hawley and his wife
Children are Edward, Richard, Henry, Francis and Catherine.
New South Wales, Australia, Unassisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1826-1922
(Not this one then.)
-
Do you have her parents names several trees have her father as John Prentice Hawley and Isabella Calderwood ?
-
Yes Rosie17, John HAWLEY and Isabella CALDERWOOD are her parents.
On the 1851 UK census John HAWLEY is a Confectioner.
-
Yes just seen the marriage and where they were in 1851 census John Hawley confectioner
-
A Mr. J. HAWLEY, Confectioner of Bathurst was summoned due to possessing a stole bank note.
I wonder if it is my John HAWLEY?

It could be as they don't seem to be around in other census forms
I came across 2 entries one in 1852 Isabella Hawley aged 35 but that would give a wrong birth date and Isabella Hawley aged 13,Catherine Hawley 2 all coming from Liverpool arriving Victoria 1852 but says she was a widow some other writing but hard to make out ..
The next one was Isabella Hawley aged 50 Matron and Catherine Hawley aged 14 leaving Liverpool and arriving Melbourne 28/11/1864
-
Sorry Raylen :)
-
Hi Ted there are several articles in the newspaper one mentions the marriage of his niece Isabella Mattison ( adopted daughter ) she was in the 1851 census ...Wonder if this is the Isabella Hawley aged 13 on the 1852 record arriving Victoria on board the vessel Rajahgopaul
-
Sorry I was away eating dinner.
Yes I saw the niece Isabella Mattison's wedding too and the 1851 census. Seems the whole family came out.
I wonder if they came out seperately as they could afford too.
Yes I think the Isabella and Catherine on the Great Victoria are probably Catherine and her mother. I wonder how the others got here?
-
I steward in our local museum here in Suffolk and we have an old newspaper displayed, open at the appropriate corresponding page to the present week. Every week there are advertisements for Australia. this week I noticed 'Women Domestics: passage paid and GBP 2.00'. There are so many for farm workers, couples - farmworker and domestic/cook, domestics etc. They are all passage paid with guaranteed job plus in many cases one or two pounds spending money!
Quite a few of them are listed via Agencies in local towns and one or two for London Agencies.
Just a thought :)

According to the indexes at State Records NSW the RAJAHGOPAUL arrived at Moreton Bay, which is in Queensland. The Colony of Queensland became a separate colony in 1859 so arriving Moreton Bay would be considered to be part of NSW in 1852.

The image of Isabella and Catherine HAWLEY arriving on the GREAT VICTORIA in Melbourne in 1864 shows that they were contracted to land in Sydney.

Oooh Cando the immigration record you found seems closer than mine.
And the insovent court is very interesting too.
I found John's grave - he is buried in Bathurst Cemetery with a death year of 1886. He is the only HAWLEY in the cemetery
-
Ted I can't see a death reg in 1886 for a John HAWLEY on the NSW bdm. Probably mistranscribed.
This John born c1839, your John according to the 1851 census born c1818.
http://www.bathurstfhg.asn.au/cemidx.php?alpha=H
HAWLEY John 1886 49 years 3206
The only death reg I can find for a John HAWLEY at Bathurst.
3224/1866
HAWLEY John
Father John Mother Catherine
District Bathurst.
Getting late for me and I make silly errors so will leave this for now :)
Cheers
Cando
Edit...wonder if there is an error with the year of the transcribed record at Bathurst...1886 instead of 1866..would make his year of birth c1817. Just a thought :-\
-
Thanks Cando, I hadn't even looked at the age of that death.
Must be tired or rusty - probably both.
Thanks for your help,
Cheers, Ted

Ted, There's a coroner's report for the death of John HAWLEY 17 Dec 1866 at Bathurst.
You'll find it on Ancestry... ;)
-
Oooh Merlin, waving your magic wand as usual. Thank you for the baptism.
With his parents names it is more possible to find him I hope.
Red post: thanks for the info on the coroners report Merlin
-
My Ancestry Sub doesn't let me see inquests :(
-
I have the Bathurst books here which I will have a look now & see what I can find.
The magic wand will have to blow the dust off them first though ;D
-
My Ancestry Sub doesn't let me see inquests :(
Really ??? Don't worry ;)
-
Thank you so much Merlin,
I actually thought my Ancestry sub had run out, but I think they renewed it. However the only credit card details they have are about 3 years out of date, so I'm not sure how it is being paid for?

Ooooh So he drowned - I have searched Trove to find a newspaper article but I havent found one yet.
I love the hand writing of these old documents. Thank you so much for going to the trouble of sending it to me.
-
Do you think this could be him and they got his name wrong?

Thank you for the inscription Merlin.
I so hope in his delirious state that he just fell in while trying to get a bucket of water.
The newspaper article I found said he was a "confectioner", but as Cando pointed out he is of the wrong age to be the John HAWLEY, confectioner I am looking for, so is he related, or am I barking up a gum tree.
Ooooh thinking out aloud please bare with me. the Bathurst cemetery site has John HAWLEY's death as 1886. If this is a typo error and this is the John HAWLEY who fell down the well in 1866. He could well be my JH. 1866 aged 49 gives him a birth date of 1817.
-
It's a typo error on the website - there are several ::) It should be 1866 not 1886.
I have copies of the original transcriptions from years ago. One of OH's rellies was one of the ladies who worked on the project.
Just found some siblings for John & his mother's maiden name.
-
Merlin, I think you have done it again.
I think he is my JH and the website is wrong.
Family probably arrived in 1852 as Cando found. John became insolvent in Sydney by 1857 (I wonder if he went to Bathurst for a new start) and he was dead by 1866. So after 14 years in the colony what happened to Catherine and Isabella?
At 5 o'clock this afternoon this family was just a few names on a family tree. Thank you to you all, I now have a fuller picture of them.
Some people remain names and dates on my family tree. And then sometimes some of them shout at me to find their story. John HAWLEY is one of those people.
-
Red post: Thank you so much Merlin.
I have to go to bed. Need to be at work in 6 hours.
Thanks for everything
Luv, Ted

St Peter Liverpool witnesses John Horshall ? and Jane Horshall
-
Hi everyone I’m trying to find how John Hawley came to Australia. He was a confectioner first in Sydney then in Bathurst. He was married to Isabella Calderwood in 1837. I think his daughter was Catherine.
