Hi, I recently got in contact with some cousins who I found by using the BMD. When got in contact and starting talking about our families I asked about their sister Mandy, and they had no idea who I was talking about!
We later found out that they did have a sister that had been given up for adoption. I have said I will help they find her, but I don't know where to start!
Can anyone help?
She was born in 1974 Great Yarmouth.

There seem to be a lot of tips etc here

You do have to be very careful as the sister may not know that she was adopted. If she does, hopefully she may have registered on one of the sites that help reunite adopted children with their birth families.

Hi Tom
If she was adopted 'out' of the family and you don't know the name she was adopted into, you won't be able to find her without going through some official channels such as registering with the GRO adopted persons contact register and hoping she does the same.
https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register
A copy of her birth cert will confirm her parentage and adoption but no details of the family that adopted her.
If you do know her new name then it may be possible to locate a marriage and an address for her in the usual manner.

I think family members can only search if the adoption took place after 12 Nov 1975
There are lots of sites giving information on the legalities of tracing an adopted adult

Hi, I was adopted (nothing to do with your family, I hasten to add) but I traced my family through barnados, but I think you can go to a family tracing service, like The Salvation Army ( yes I've been watching family finders) but you must be careful as she might not know she was adopted. Best of luck.

From the Salvation Army's (U.K.) FAQ page-
Who is not included in the tracing programme?
• We are not able to become involved in searches where adoption has taken place, due to current UK legislation.
• We cannot look for children under 18 years of age, or other 'vulnerable' missing people where a physical search or police involvement
would be more appropriate.
• We do not look for 'possible' relatives or friends and do not carry out family history enquiries.
• We do not look for relatives for estate, legal or other business purposes.
