Title: John Wylie of Sykefoot, Unthank, Ewes, Dumfriesshire
Post by: Nodrogw on Sunday 24 August 14 12:40 BST (UK)
Has anyone any information concerning John Wylie. He was born in 1826. On 16th December 1853, a child named Jane Wylie was born to Ann Scott of Hollows, Canonbie, Dumfriesshire. The father was the aforementioned John Wylie. Ann Scott took him to court in Dumfries on 19th June 1854, where she was awarded money to care for the child. The child was brought up by her grandparents, George and Ann Scott at Hollows, Canonbie. I would be grateful for any information concerning John Wylie, Jane Wylie, or indeed, Ann Scott

I found this little bit of information.      The spelling of the surname is different but I wondered if it was anything to do with your John Wylie.

"Entry 1446:  Died 1856 Liverpool - Jane Wyle, wife of John Wyle, Master of the Schooner "William Thomson" of Dumfries."

I just thought that this might mean something to you, simply because Liverpool and Dumfries are both mentioned.

Rosie. Can you help me. Can you tell me how to find Ann Scott on the 1851 Census. I have looked at the archives mentioned, and have discovered that John Wylie died on 28th September 1855. It is the right John Wylie, as the parents match. The death was registered by Ann Wylie, who is stated as his sister. She is the one who appears on the 1851 census mentioned above, where Andrew is the father and Mina the mother.

Searching the Langholm Archive Centre's Eskdale and Liddesdale Advertiser's Index for "Unthank" brings up references to Edward Aitchison and his wife.
