Post by: ceejayh on Sunday 24 August 14 23:18 BST (UK)
Trying to find information on Joshua Astin b. 19 Jul 1834 d. 18 Dec 1902
and his wife Susannah b. 25 Nov 1832.
They married at St Pauls Church, Dalehall, Burslem on 2 Sep 1858.
Their daughter Sarah Jane Astin was born on 6 Aug 1859 and was christened at the Bethel Chapel.
She married a Percival Hamstall who died on 13 May 1902 and she herself died on 11 Nov 1901.
I have looked at online records and have not been able to find anything.  I am looking for descendants of this family.  Any help would be appreciated.   ???

FreeBMD is showing:

September qtr 1858
Wolstanton district     vol 6b, page 96

Arpin, Joshua
Ball, Susannah

Goldstraw, Sarah
Meakin, William

A double-whammy with mistranscriptions?! ;D

Burslem was a parish within the Wolstanton Registration District until 1922.

Not FreeBMD's fault - the original entry in the GRO Index says Joshua ARPIN - between surnames Arnup and Arrowsmith  :-X

Added:  and looking at the original parish register entry - he appears to have signed as Joshua ASPIN

Added (2):  The marriage entry at Burslem says that Joshua is a Builder from Macclesfield.

There is a newspaper article relating to the death of Sarah Jane Aspin, spinster, embroiderer born Macclesfield 1859 the daughter of Joshua Aspin and Susannah Ball who died in 1942 in Macclesfield leaving £500. the article request any next of kin to contact a firm of solicitors.

As for the Astin family there is no record on Staffordshire records.

The mystery is, why would Susannah Ball born Manchester and Joshua Aspin born cheshire marry in Staffordshire and have their daughter b Cheshire baptised there.
All census entries have them living in Macclesfield.

I wish the vicar at Burslem had better hand-writing - I might then be able to read the "abode" for Susannah.  ;D  Whatever it is, I think it ends "hole"  Is there a Dalehole?  I can't see one.  Her father, John, was a Travelling Salesman, so she could very well have been born in Manchester!

Unfortunately that is all the information I have. A friend has discovered a Bible in an attic with this information written in it and I am trying to reunite it with its rightful owner!

How very strange.  Most of the facts for Joshua and Susannah can be verified from records - except that Joshua's surname was Aspin.  He did get married on 2 September 1858 and he did die on 18 December 1902 - there is an entry in the Wills Index to verify this.  Sarah Jane's information can also be verified, with the exception of her marriage and death date.  However, it does look as though the bible's return is not going to be possible to the immediate family.  :'(

There is an entry in the Wills Index for Sarah Jane Aspin - died 8 January 1942, spinster of 71 Roe Street, Macclesfield, which is the same address given for Joshua's entry in the Wills Index.  Administration was granted to HM Treasury Solicitor.

I had to go to Lichfield Records Office this morning, so took the opportunity to look at the Marriage Allegation.  Nothing further to be added other than it was dated 27 September 1858 and confirmed that Joshua was from Macclesfield and Susannah was from Dalehall.

This is a puzzle, all else fits so just who was Percival Hamstall/Hemstall, the Hamstall name from public trees suggests they are from Staffordshire?

Yes, Hamstall would suggest Staffordshire - Hamstall Ridware.

This may very well be clutching at straws BUT  ;D

As we have been given death dates for Percival and Sarah, I looked at FreeBMD to find a Percival with any surname who died in June quarter 1902 - a lot of them were aged 0, so could be discounted.  However, there is a death registration for Percival TUNSTALL in that quarter in Poplar.  SO I looked at the 1901 Census for Percival Tunstall - there he is, born Stafford, a Joiner, and aged 67, in Stepney Workhouse with wife SARAH aged 77, born Manchester.  There is a death registration for Sarah Tunstall in Poplar District in December quarter 1901.  I haven't dared to look for a marriage.

Or is that too much of a coincidence?  :-\   Or more likely - have I lost the second braincell again?

Wow! I cannot believe the trouble you are going to and am very grateful  :) I will see if I can obtain a copy of the page to decipher it myself as information was given to me over the phone, but what you have both found is interesting and thank you so much.  Obviously I would like to reunite it with a member of the family but if there is no-one that would be a shame.  Just have to give it a try though!  I will keep you posted!

Parents Names (title)

Husband Joshua Aspin Born July 19th 1834
Wife Susannah Aspin Born Nov 25th 1832
Married Sept 2 1858 at St Pauls Church, Dale Hall, Burslem.

This would tie in with the deaths registered in Macclesfield district.  My thoughts are that it is worth looking into Sarah's death to see who registered it but can this be done without having to purchase a death certificate?  I suppose it is worth looking through obituaries but would I be looking at a Staffordshire or Cheshire newspaper?  Thank you for your help!
