Title: locating william & jane caldwell
Post by: brylio on Wednesday 27 August 14 11:25 BST (UK)
Can anybody suggest how I can find the above siblings. William was born c 1859 Armagh Ireland his sister Jane was born 11/4/1863 Dalkeith Scotland. There parents being John Caldwell & Mary Bird. John was a sergeant in the 26th Regiment of Foot who was discharged to pension in 11/6/1860 in Edinburgh. Another sister Mary Elizabeth was born 17/10/1861 in Dalkeith Scotland. John died 1871 in Pontypool Wales. In the 1861 Scotland William is living with his parents in Dalkeith Scotland. In the 1871 census for Newport Wales no record of William or Jane is mentioned living with there mother Mary as she is recorded as a widow as John had died just prior to the census, only there sister Mary Elizabeth is mentioned. The 1881 census still does not mention them. I cannot find a death record for William or Jane from 1861 to 1871 in Scotland or England.

This is a tough one. I had a look yesterday but there wasn't anything obvious. Do you have the brothers and sisters of John Caldwell and Mary Bird to see if they could be living with them?

I have John Caldwell siblings as -William Caldwell b1821 in Paisley d 1886 in Edinburgh, Margaret Caldwell b 1819 in Paisley. I do not have any other info on Margaret. The family of William is - William 1864, Ella 1865-1923, John 1866, Horace 1868, George 1868, Charles 1870, Alfred 1871, David 1875, Victor 1877, Maggie 1880. All born in Edinburgh. In my grandmothers photos there is a photo of Ella Caldwell as it appears she was corresponding to Mary Elizabeth Caldwell in Australia, also there is another photo of a gentleman with no name attached. Is it possible to track this family down in Edinburgh as there must be a connection due to the correspondence, and is it possible to get anything from the photo studio name of the two photos I have( Stuart & Whinfield Newcastle on Tyne)

Hi,
From Freecen on the 51 census the Caldwells look like they have already moved from Paisley to Edinburgh.  In addition to father William age 54 and son William age 20 there is a daugher Mary showing age 17. The family are living at 27 Carrubbers Close. Is John in the service by then?

I think they can also be seen in 41 living St Georges Street, Paisley but still no sign of John.

John Caldwell joined the 26th Foot Regiment 31/5/1839 at the age of 18 according to his service record in Glasgow and discharged 1860 after 21 years service.

A couple of things...brother William - the lithographer - lives on until at least 1901 when he is showing as retired but not dead :)

Have you seen the death certificates showing at SP for the William Caldwell born 1859 died 1867 or the two for the Jane Caldwells born 1863 died before 1871.

Out of curiosity where did John and Mary marry?

Sorry - SP is Scotland's People. I'm not saying these people are who you are looking for just that they match the birth dates and death range. There is an excellent thread here on Rootschat to help with searching at Scotland's People:

Hello Brylio,

Here is the family of William Caldwell. in 1881. census.

Address, 12 East Mayfield, Edinburgh, St. Cuthberts.

William Caldwell, Head, Printer Lithographer, M. age 51 years, M. born Paisley, Renfrew,
Margaret Caldwell, Wife, M. age 38 years, F. born Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty,
William Caldwell, Son, Pupil Teacher, U. age 17 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Isabella S. Caldwell, Daur, Pupil Governess, U. age 16 years, F. born Edinburgh,
John C. Caldwell, Son, Chemist, Apprentice, U. age 15 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Horace Caldwell, Son, Hosier, Apprentice, U. age 13 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Charles E. Caldwell, Son, Scholar, age 12 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Alfred G. Caldwell, Son, Scholar, age 10 years, M. born Edinburgh,
David L. Caldwell, Son, Scholar, age 6 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Victor Caldwell, Son, age 4 years, M. born Edinburgh,
Maggie L. Caldwell, Daur, age 1 year, F. born Edinburgh,
Annie Stewart, Servant Domestic, U. age 14 years, F. born Edinburgh.

The above William Caldwell, married Margaret Munro, 19/August/1862. Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh.

You will also note that this William Caldwell, was born approx 1830/1831. in Paisley, Renfrew.

You also state that a brother of your John Caldwell, called William, was born 1821. in Paisley.

You also state that Ella( Isabella ) Caldwell, died 1923. Ella Caldwell, actually died 1933. in Edinburgh, and she was not married.

Its quite possible that the William Caldwell, you had as born 1821. died young and his parents William Caldwell, and his wife Mary, had another William Caldwell, in 1830/1831. which would make this William Caldwell, a brother of your John Caldwell, therefore the reason the communications between Ella Caldwell, and Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, who i presume is the daughter of John Caldwell, and Mary Bird.

If you are privy to the parents names of your John Caldwell, ie fact then the marriage certificate of this William Caldwell, and Margaret Munro, of 1862. would confirm the parents names as they will be on this marriage certificate.

Regards,
Jonn.

jonn,
Thank you for the info you have sent me. I must apology as i had Ella death down as 1933, don't know why I put 1923 down, must have had a bad day that day. The William born 1821 is the brother of John Caldwell. This William also had a son named William, he is the one you have listed marrying Margaret Munro.
Is it possible for me to track any of William & Margaret Munro family today??

Finally had a chance to look at death certificates suggested by jen at SP but these are not correct.
Any help in locating these two, William born 1859 Ireland and Jane born 1863 Dalkeith would be appreciated.
Jonn, any ideas how I might be able to connect to the family of William Caldwell you gave me living at East Mayfield. I know Ella died unmarried, I have found a possible reference to a William Caldwell born 1863 migrating to Canada who was a professor at McGill uni.
Any suggestions to how to post a photo in Edinburgh for somebody to recognize or know. This photo was taken in Newcastle in Tyne early 1900's and is connected to this family and could be one of the children from Mayfield in adult life.
