My great grand mother, Mary Kennedy, dau of James Kennedy and Elizabeth Pattison was born according to the O.P.R. Births 789/00 0050 0297 on 16th September 1836 and baptised exactly one month later in Hawick.
I can not find any trace of her in 1841 census, but there is a Mary Kennedy in the 1851 Census aged 7! At first I thought 1836 Mary had died prior to the 1841 census but no trace of a death, and no trace of any birth of a Mary in 1844.
I am going round in circles, any suggestion?
I have possible births to James & Elizabeth of John in 1834, Matthew in 1835, Ann Little in 1839, James in 1841, and I am lead to believe that there were several others up to 1852

What do you have on your Mary later on? Do her marriage and death records and post-marriage censuses corroborate the parents' names and 1836 birthdate?
-
Census in 1851 Mary is 7 years, 1861 age is 17, 1871 age 27 , 1891 age is 47, 1901 age 57 and 1911 is 68, margin of error, and death at 76 on 26th Dec 1919, (born around 1843/1844), @ the same address as she had lived in since before the 1901 census.
1851, 1861 & 1871 she is living with her parents James & Elizabeth, and her son, James, prior to getting married in 1872 to a James Elder, with whom she went on to have
Walter 1872
Elizabeth Pattison 1873
John 1873
Margaret B (Meg) 1875
Mary K 1878
Christina 1882 &
Annie 1885

According to FamilySearch, James Kennedy and Elizabeth/Eliza Pattison had children all baptised at Hawick:
John b and bap 1834
Matthew b 1834 and bap 1835
Ann Little b and bap 1839
Mary b and bap 1836
James b and bap 1841
No records of any children after 1841, so it's possible their first daughter Mary died and they named a subsequent daughter Mary whose baptism record is not on FamilySearch, or whose baptism wasn't recorded. According to the census they also had:
Mary b 1843/44
James A b 1845/46 (so first son James may also have died)
Elizabeth P b. 1848/49
Jane H b. 1851/52
Have you searched the OPR records on ScotlandsPeople in case these baptism are on there but are not on FamilySearch?

Yes I have checked SP and have that information, but nothing about the deaths
thanks for your help as I do not use Family Search

Civil registration of deaths in Scotland didn't start until 1855, so any death records before that are burial records kept by the church. However, not every parish kept good burial records so many deaths before 1855 are now unrecorded.
ScotlandsPeople has a page which gives which OPRs have survived for each parish. For Hawick, it says it has deaths from 1758 to 1841, but not for after 1841. It's also missing marriages between 1800 and 1821.
FamilySearch is free to use, and it a good place to start when researching births and marriages before 1855. It's an index only, but if something is on there you can usually find and download the actual OPR image on ScotlandsPeople.

http://www.sgtranscriptions.co.uk/
this firm transcribes death records from the Borders pre 1855 and I am sure we have his books on Hawick later on than 1841 in our archives for Borders Family History Society and as I am on duty tonight can do a look up for you if you like. As JMStrachan says not all deaths are recorded but it is worth a look.

At the archives we only seem to have to 1835 and haven't checked if SG have done later or not.
But there are two Kennedy deaths which may be of interest?
Kennedy, a child of James Kennedy, stockingmaker 24 June 1833
Kennedy, a child of James Kennedy, stockingmaker 6th Nov 1835

thank you for the information, as I was not aware of the site nor that BFHS had any of the records.
Have been a member for several years, no 2336.
Any help will always be appreciated.

Hi squirejay,
This doesn't help with finding the death but here is Mary Kennedy in the 1841 census with her parents: http://www.scottishindexes.co.uk/41transcript.aspx?houseid=78901125
There is a very useful transcription of some Hawick deaths between 1825 and 1862 here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/ROX/Hawick/wilson.txt sadly no sign of Mary but it may be useful to you in the future.
