Title: Sarah Kane/Cane ~ Wishaw, Lanarkshire
Post by: Braccy on Saturday 30 August 14 20:37 BST (UK)
Hi All

I am trying to find a death entry for a Sarah Kane or Cane, the last entry I can find for her is aged 53 living as a boarder in Marshall Road, Wishaw on the 1911 Census, she was living with the Pearson family & working as a Hawker.
I know she never married but had several illegitimate children, she was the eldest daughter of William & Mary Jane (nee Cullen) Cain/Kane of Wishaw.

Hope someone can help as I have been searching for a long time.
Thankyou.

I had a sneaky feeling that I had looked through the records for this family before -

Hi Lodger

Yes you kindly gave me the cemetery records for a lot of my Kane/Cain family some time ago, Sarah Cain was one person who I just couldn't find after 1911.

I wonder if you can enlighten me on another query, I have a John Lochran aged 10 months, born about 1890 on the 1891 Census, he is listed as a Nursling which is a term i haven't come across anywhere else & was curious to know what it meant & who he belonged to.

All sorts of possibilities with this one. Could he have been Sarah's son? If the father recognised him and put his name on the birth certificate it would have made his surname different from the mother's. A nursling would, I expect, a new-ish baby still being cared for, perhaps he was sickly?
Or, he could have been a neighbours child who was being looked after while the parents worked?
I notice there is a family at 16 Steel St by the name of Lochrine. Also another family at Scotts Rows, a short distance from Steel St, by the name of Lochrane. This last family had a child aged 1 year, perhaps this John is an older brother?
There is a family in Hamilton in 1891 by the name of Lochren, the mother has young children, she is Mary aged 33 born Wishaw. could she be a sister of Sarah?
Sames goes for the family at Scotts Rows, the mother is Agnes aged 28 born Wishaw. William & Mary Jane had a daughter named Agnes who died January 1872. Did they have another Agnes soon after that? It would make the age correct.
The only thing to do is check the birth for John Lochran and find out who his parents were.

On Scotlandspeople there is an 1890 birth in Cambusnethan parish for a JOHN LOUGHRINE. Did you try that?

I think that John Loughrine is the one, I looked up Nursling & it applies to a child being looked after by another family for a few shillings a week,I suppose like a Foster Child, John's mother Annie Loughrine died a few days after his birth & as his father Patrick was a Coalminer & only lived a few doors away from the Kanes/Cains in Steel Street it would make sense that they were being paid to look after him while dad was working.
Thank you again for your help.
