Title: Bridget Tierney (ne้ McMahon) Death
Post by: ATGoldsmith on Wednesday 03 September 14 00:53 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to find the death of my 4x Great Grandmother Bridget Tierney (ne้ McMahon).  Here is what I've got so far...

Born: c.1851, Ireland to UNKNOWN McMahon and Jane UNKNOWN.
I have no idea where in Ireland she was born but her mother appears with her in the 1891 Census in Paisley as Jane McMahon aged 68, widowed and also born in Ireland.

Married: 11 July 1868, in Ireland to William Tierney.
I got this date from their child Sarah's birth certificate in Paisley.

First child: Robert Tierney born 16 May 1869 in Burnerana, Donegal, Ireland. (Ancestry)

Other children were all born in Paisley.

Cannot find her or William or Robert on the 1871 which suggests they arrived after this date (but it must have been before 1873 when Sarah was born in Paisley.)

1881 Census in Paisley with family.
1891 Census in Paisley with family and mother and lodgers (she was a lodging house keeper)
Cannot find her or William on 1901 Census.

On William Tierney's death certificate in 1927 it shows that Bridget is still alive.
On her son Robert's death certificate in 1933 it shows father William is deceased but mother Bridget is still alive.

This where the paper trail stops.

Can you help?!

Thanks!
ATG

Hi ATG

Haven't made any headway so far on Bridget, but thought this might be the younger children, maybe staying with sister Rose Ann (if she married a McGee). From 1901:

Rose Ann Mcgee 25 bleacher b. Paisley
Bridget Mcgee 4
Rose Ann Mcgee 3
Connell Mcgee 1
William Ferney 22 boarder Ship Yard Labourer b. Paisley
Patrick Kerney 20  boarder Railway Labourer b. Renfrew
Hannah McBrerty 20

Address: 10 Prussia St, Paisley

Hi Monica,

Thanks for finding that census, the Tierney name can be so hard to trace!

Hi Monica,

Update on Rose Ann Tierney (McGee):
I have seen the marriage record and she married Connell McGee, son of James and Sarah (ne้ McGuire) on 7 Aug 1895 in Paisley.

So right parents for her?

Wonder what happened to parents around that time that would explain the two younger brothers living with her...

There could have been a marriage split or strife of some sort relating to the parents maybe?

Parents were perfectly right on the marriage for Rose, yes.

Although the parent's situation is strange, you're right, because on William's death it says 'Married to Bridget'.  So unless they did split up but remained officially married so they had to put it on the record. I don't know! ;)  All very confusing.

Found Connell and Rose Ann on the 1911 and it has revealed something interesting!  Here is the cut-down transcription:

Connell McGhee - Head - 39yrs - Married - Plasterer's Lab. - Born in Paisley
Rose A McGhee - Wife - 36yrs - Married (15yrs, 8 children born alive and 7 still alive) - Born in Paisley
Bridget McGhee - Dau - 14yrs
Rose A McGhee - Dau - 13yrs - Born in IRELAND [This is different to what it said on the 1901].
Then there are the other five children all born in Paisley.

I guess this could this explain why Connell 'snr' is missing from the 1901 as, for some reason, he was staying in Ireland?

Also, on the marriage certificate I forgot to mention that one of the witnesses was a 'Patrick McGhee' even though Connell's surname was 'McGee'.  There is obviously a lot of variety with the surname spelling!

McGee will have lots of variations...and Patrick can often be varied with Peter!

I have got Rose Ann McGhee (Tierney)'s death on 1 Apr 1953 in Paisley and Bridget Tierney (M.S. McMahon) is put as deceased.  Therefore, Bridget's death has been narrowed down to 20 years from 1933 to 1953.  The informant on the death was the son, Connell.

Is this daughter Sarah Jane's details from 1901:

John Wilson 43 carter
Sarah Jane Wilson 29 b. Greenock
Rose Ann Wilson 7
Sarah Jane Wilson 6
James Wilson 3
John Wilson 8 Months

Address: 19 Mcadams Lane Glasgow/Milton

From other people's family trees, Sarah Jane first married a Joseph Logan in 1893 (first 3 children from that marriage) and then married John Wilson in 1900 in Milton, Glasgow.

If correct Sarah Jane, not sure this will help with what happened to William and Bridget around this time  :-\ But, at least it will help you square off with what happened with the other daughter, Sarah Jane. Guessing first born Robert is your direct line connection from what you have?
