Title: Help with two Winnipeg death dates please
Post by: RedMystic on Monday 08 September 14 19:21 BST (UK)
Good morning Chatters

I've ALMOST broken down a brick wall & I'm hoping you can help me just a bit more please.  :)

Is there a way of searching deaths in Winnipeg mid 1940s to mid 1950?  ??? I just got off the phone with the grand daughter of the following couple and she said they died when she was a young girl so believes it was in that time period. I'd love to find death dates, final resting places, and obituaries for

Dolina or Della M(a)cDonald
Birth 5 Sep 1888 in Wapella, 4-14-01-W2, Saskatchewan, Canada
Death in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

and her husband

Murdo Campbell
Birth 12 May 1884 in Bragar, Isle of Lewis, Inverness-shire, Scotland
Death in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Any help you can provide would be immensely appreciated.

One more note: I think I can see Murdo in the 1963 Voters List so his death date may have been a bit later than the time frame I've been given.  ;) Dolina / Della isn't with him at that point.

Dolina / Della appears to disappear between the 1940 and 1945 Voters Lists.

Hi Red,

Have you looked at phone book under his or her name to see when both goes absent there? If you contact the local genealogy group in Wpg they may be able to assist as well.

Here is an obituary for Murdo Campbell from the 25 Feb 1957 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press. There was another Murdo Campbell who died in 1966 who was born about 1878 who would likely be the one you found on the voters list.

I also found an obituary for Dolina Campbell, wife of Murdo Campbell with the same info as in the other obituary. It was in the 4 Aug 1950 edition of the Winnipeg Free Press. However this indicates Dolina was born in Scotland, not Saskatchewan. As well, her age is out by about 10 years.

Good morning Jacqui & JDC

Thank you to both. This is unexpected. I'm quite sure now that this Dolina isn't my great grandmother's sister as there is no listing in the obit for a Flora married to a Norman McDonald & the Dolina I'm looking for was born in Saskatchewan 4 years after her parents arrival from Benbecula. Heavy sigh. Back to the drawing board.

I'll send the obits along to the grand daughter with whom I spoke the other day & I know she'll be delighted with those.

Thanks again.

Dolina found in 1891 census of Assiniboia East age 3 with father John 38, mother Christina 38, siblings Marion 13, Flora 11, Mary 6, Donald 5 and Grandparents Donald 75 & Catherine 73 Mcdonald.

In the 1901 census of Assiniboia East Brookside the McDonalds with given birthdates are John 4 Jul 1852, Christina Jun 1850, Mary 8 Aug 1884, Dolian 5 Sep 1888, Katie 10 Jun 1891 and Johanna 2 Apr 1893.  Young Donald and grandparents missing.

1906 census of Assiniboia East District 11 Sub-District 25 has John 53, Christina 55, Flora 25, Mary 22, Dollena 18, Katie 15, Johanna 13.

1911 census Quappelle Saskatchewan has John b Jul 1852, Christie b Jul 1850 and Delina b Sep 1888.  Flora, Katie & Johanna likely working for nearby farm families.

1916 census of Winnipeg Manitoba has Christina 66, Flora 35, Dollin 28, Katie 25 & Johanna 23.  John must have died between 1911 and 1916.

1921 census of Winnipeg has Christina 71, Flora 40, Delena 31 & Katie 29.  Manitoba Vitals give deaths up to 70 years ago and there is no listing for Dolina or Christina up to 1944.  Christina would almost certainly have died before 1960, but there is no obit to be found in the Winnipeg Free Press.  No marriage found for this Dolina in the listings which run to 1934.  The Dolina McDonald that married Murdo Campbell did so in 1917.

Thank you to both.

Mother Christie did indeed die in Saskatchewan in her daughter Flora's home in her 101st year. Flora married a distant cousin in 1928 & went to the farm to raise his 13 children. I've tracked all of Flora's sisters except Dolina. My mum thinks her married surname MAY have been Munro or something similar (hence my look at Murdo).

So far, I've arrived at nothing new &  am still looking for Dolina.

Thanks again.

You probably have done this but I'll ask anyway...Have you checked obituaries for any of her sisters to see if she is mentioned? I know Johanna died in 1975 and there is an obituary in the Calgary Herald. Have you seen it? If not, do you have her exact date of death?

Thanks for your participation, Jacquie.  I have been working on just that.  ;)

I came across Dolina's sister Flora's obit. (Happy dancing here.) It's from the Moosomin paper which is un-indexed, but where there's a will, there's a way.  ;D

It confirms that my mum's recollection of surname Munro is correct but still no first initial as the "D" in the obit stands for Dolina.   :P ::)

The death date (according to FaG) for the youngest sister Johanna Sommerville nee McDonald was 4 Feb 1975 in Calgary. If I can find her obit, I may have a better lead for Dolina.

I recall that some of the Calgary Herald papers are on-line for that period, but I've not been able to find the site. I don't see the Calgary Herald in the Peel Collection or (for that period) in Our Future Our Past. Might you know where I can see the Calgary Herald on-line?  ???

Back to the search. Thanks again for your interest.

PS  Go Mum for correctly remembering the Munro surname! I'll have to call her later today to let her know that her memory is still in well-oiled working condition.  ;)

I got into the on-line Calgary Herald obits for 1975 through Googlenews. There are 5 papers digitized for February 1975 all between 1st and 7th of the month. Johanna died Feb 4 and there is no obit for her on the 5, 6 or 7. There are no papers for the month on-line after that.

Back to the drawing board to find Johanna's sister's husband's first name again it seems.

Ever hopeful.

I found the death notice for Johanna in the 4 Feb 1975 edition but it was no help. Here's the link (to the left of the "In Memoriam" heading:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a14/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a14/)

I think we must be using different Google News sites because there were a number of editions after the 7th listed when I searched. Here's a link for the Google News Archives list page I use in case it is different from the one you have:
http://news.google.com/newspapers (http://news.google.com/newspapers)

At least we have some perimeters to work within since Flora was married in 1928 and there was mention in the Free Press that D. McDonald attended a wedding shower for her and we know Dolina predeceased Flora.

I found a name for Dolina's husband. Kate McDonald Eccles of Wapella died in Winnipeg and there is a brief obituary in the 29 May 1951 edition of the Free Press. It mentions that she was survived by Mrs. Thomas Munro. Looks like we've narrowed her death to between 1951 and 1972.

Jacquie - that's brilliant!

It never occurred to me that Katherine was buried in St Paul's. I've walked that cemetery twice in my life: once when I went back to Saskatchewan with my mum when I was 18 and and then the summer of 2012 when I made my husband drive for 2 days across the bald a** prairie in pouring rain in search of family history. I never noticed an Eccles headstone (but it wasn't on my surname list  ;)) & it isn't listed in the FaG site today, but you've got me doing a two step in my kitchen. :-*

So, on to Dolina. It's a Thomas Munro we're seeking is it?!!! Listen up Mister Munro & wife Dolina - I'm going to find you. Ready or not. 8)

I can't thank you enough, Jacquie.  :)

Hi RedMystic

I don't know if you're still interested in notices in Calgary papers but I've used this site before

Start your happy, happy, joy, joy dance... Here are the death registrations for Dollena Munro and Thomas Munro:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a15/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a15/)
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a16/ (http://www.rootschat.com/links/01a16/)

Dollena's death registration indicates she been in BC for 16 years while Thomas' says 32 years - hopefully a clue to when they married.

Oh Jacquie - what a find! Thank you.

In addition to your deductions, the informant is sister Mary which likely means that Dolina didn't have any children.

I'm doing back flips - AND through all of this, I located a photo of the informant sister, Mary's husband & all 5 sons with their bagpipes.

It is truly a very happy day & I'll be dancing, dancing, dancing in my dreams - after everything gets entered in my tree (of course).

Thank you.  :-* :-*

I'm glad I could help. It was quite fun going through the twists and turns.

I noticed on her husband's death registration she signed her name Dollena which matches the entry for her birth in the Saskatchewan vital stats database. I wonder if she went by Dolly

My mum says, "yes" she thinks she did go by Dolly. My aunt says "Nope."  LOL Mind you, they agree that they only remember her visiting his sister, Flora, once.

Two census show her transcribed as Delina.  ::)

Oh well, no worries now. Thanks to you, my lost Dolina / Dollena is found. :-*
