Hi there
I have a death that ocured in Emmaville in 1954 and was wondering if there was a newspaper in Emmaville or Glen Innes that might have a funeral notice or death notice.
Riley Madge died 6th February, 1954 and was buried in Emmaville
there is a headstone for her as Madge Hughes.
Next to her is Robert Hughes who died 9th January, 1960
many thanks Jenn

I received an email back from the state libray saying no funeral or death notices appeared in the Glen Innes Examiner ofr either party :(
But the value of a certificate can never be underestimated
I received a copy of Hercules Riley and Maud Rummery and her parents are Steven Rummery and Amy Ann Skinner.
Maud/Madge may never have know that she was born before her parents marriage, which the NSW records show she was....
Hercules and Maud never seem to have divorced and she has had several children under the name of Hughes and Doolan and recorded also as Riley....
thanks to those who helped especially Sparret

Hi,
Looking at Emmaville site, seen your info. There are Riley's still there and i noticed that you also mentioned Rummery, that was the name of my grandmother's mother on fathers side. The name was changed from Rommel (German) at the breakout of ww1. There was two brothers, Jacob and the other i cant remember and a sister, Anna. The boys had a Oxen team and one job was to bring a school building from Grafton (nsw) to Stannom.
Yours Frendo.

Hi Jenn,
My grandfather's mother was Madge Doolan Riley. His name was Robert James Hughes. His birth certificate lists him as Robert James Riley. No father is listed on the birth certificate
I'm trying to find out who grandad's real father was? Do you have any ideas?
Thanks
Trudi Hughes

Hello there Trudi
on the research I have done it would appear that Robert James Hughes birth was registered as Riley as his parents were not married, It is hard to know if Rpbert hughes was in fact his father. but I suspect he was.

Hi Jenn,
Thank you for the information. Do you have an idea or theory around why madge riley never divorced her husband? I'm interested to find out all i can about her and her life. Any information would be most appreciated.
Thanks so much
Trudi

No I am sorry I have not found out why they never divorced... Perhaps one or either persons didn't consent to a divorce.

Hi my name is Col a family member of made Riley.
Robert Hughes is madge son he real name is Robert Riley.
-
Thanks for your reply. I had realised He was no doubt born Robert Riley but used the surname Hughes. Do you know why his parents didn't marry
thanks Jenn
-
Robert is Herbert Riley son. Herbert and madge children were sent to an
Orphanage in Sydney in 1925 and 4 of 5 children returned to the Hughes family in 1928. Which is madge sister marred name
-
Herbert and madge married in glen Innes her age 22 .
I don't know what year it was.

Hi Col
Just want to make sure that we are all talking about the right robert. My grandad was Robert hughes born in February 1922 with madge listed on the birth certificate but the father unnamed. Is this the one of the 4 kids returned to the hughes family that you are referring to? If so, how do you know with certainty that herbert was his father as the birth certificate for grandad did not list a father? Also why did the children get taken to an orphanage if both parents were alive? And when you say the children were returned to the hughes family do you mean that they were returned to madge who was by then using the hughes name and living with Robert hughes who my grandad thought his father was his whole life and indeed appeared to be named after? You also mentionedthat madge's sister's married name was hughes? I'm not understanding how this fits in? Sorry tobe so full of questions its just that this is such significant news for my family to learn. Any information would be great.
kind regards

Same questions I was going to ask Col. Also what is the name of Madge's sister you refer to please?
thanks Jenn

Could you also please give the name of the orphanage?

Do you also know why only 4 of children were returned? What happened to the 5th?

The children were sent to the orphanage because their mother madge was badly burnt in a fire and Herbert return to Newcastle.

My grandfather is Cecil the last child birth in 1920 he was fostered out

Thanks for the information col. Are you saying that herbert and madge were together until 1925 and that is when he exited to Newcastle? My grandad was born in 1922 so just trying to piece together when herbert left and Robert hughes came into the picture.

Hi
I have only just started researching for my Grandmother family history when I came across this discussion. I am Doreen Jessie Riley granddaughter & the information I have found is that Doreen mum Maud Riley was also known as a Doolan. It makes it so hard to find information when father is unknown, so I do not know who Maud(Madge) father was Or who was my grandmother Dooreen Riley dad was as well. If anyone is able to help me please let me know .
Thank you

It appears that she went by several names.
Madge Hughes - Madge Riley - Madge Doolan.

Yes that's so but what did you know her as?

Just wondering if any one knows if madge /maud riley/doolin/hughes had a certificate of exemption?
Hi there,
I doubt you will find one. As I understand it, that Certificate of Exemption system did not commence until 1943, Madge HUGHES is findable on electoral rolls at Emmaville prior to that year. To me, finding her on NSW electoral rolls until 1934 as Madge RILEY and then from 1934 onwards as Madge HUGHES shows she was unlikely to be considered by NSW government as being of Aboriginal descent.

:) I may well be duplicating some of the information found on this thread and on several others, but I hope that by placing it all together, here, that it will be useful in seeking out original bdm documents in the quest for the search for Aboriginal Heritage.
;) The registration of the birth of Maud is indexed at NSW BDM online. It is indexed under her mum’s then surname of SKINNER. The reference number is 16174 in 1882, and it was registered in the Glen Innes district.
;) Maud's mum, Amy A SKINNER, married Stephen RUMMERY in 1888, reference 4934, registered Glen Innes district.
;) Amy Ann and Stephen RUMMERY were divorced in 1916 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15663166 SMH 20 April 1916
;) Amy Ann SKINNER’s parents are noted on her 1930 marriage, (as Amy Ann RUMMERY at age 67 at Surry Hills, Sydney, NSW) as Thomas SKINNER a Station Hand and Catherine WELLS.
;) Thomas SKINNER and Catherine WELLS marriage is indexed at NSW BDM, registered Braidwood district in 1861, ref # 1485

hi majm
thanks for the info, my grand mother was aboriginal how do i prove she is from the stolen generation, her name is Doreen Jessie Riley and my great grandmother was madge/maud/doolin/riley/hughes how does anyone know if they had a certificate of exemption?
Doreen was put into and sydney orphanage in 1925 because madge was in a fire, the children returned to madge in 1928.

Hi,
Sorry, but I doubt that Maud/Madge was of Aboriginal descent and so I cannot see any reason for Madge needing a Certificate of Exemption. Madge's mum was not a married woman when Madge was born, and Madge's birth is indexed under Madge's mum's then surname of SKINNER.
:) You may need to contact the NSW State Archives for further information re the issuing of those certificates which I have understood were not part of the administrative system until the mid 1940s ... https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/series/11
:) I am not sure if there are public access restrictions on the following NSW archive listings
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/series/26 covering the Board for the Protection of Aborigines
1916 - 1928 But if you contact NSW State Archives, please do mention that the children were removed from their mum's care following her burn injuries in 1925 and then restored to her in 1928. Although unless Doreen and her siblings' Dad was of Aboriginal descent, I think the children's removal and restoration would more likely be in accordance with the then Child Welfare Act 1923, rather than the Aboriginal Protection Act.
:) In an earlier post I noted various pointers to NSW bdm certificates of registration for Madge's birth in 1882, her mum (Amy Ann)'s marriages 1888 and 1930, and back to the 1861 marriage of Amy Ann's parents at Braidwood, NSW in 1861. Other RChatters had also included similar sightings, and electoral roll sightings too.
:) I had noted that Madge's mum was Amy Ann SKINNER, and that Amy Ann SKINNER's parents were Thomas SKINNER and Catherine WELLS. I have not looked for further information on Amy's parents, but I can see a possible brother for Amy. If you were to obtain the official transcription for the birth of Thomas A SKINNER, registered Wellingrove, in 1868, you should be able to find the names and ages of his older siblings, so hopefully it should mention Amy. It is NSW BDM reference #17669.
:) Here is the 1923 Child Welfare Act http://classic.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/num_act/cwa1923n21142/
:) Here is the 1918 Aboriginal Protection Act
http://classic.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/nsw/num_act/apa1918n7342/
For many decades in NSW children were removed from their mothers under the provisions of the Child Welfare Act. It did not matter what ethnicity for their parents. If Madge was hospitalised and required long term treatment for her burns, then it is quite possible that the children were taken into 'state care' until she had recovered sufficiently for them to be returned to her care. But, in my experience, by returning them to her care is indicating they were not removed under the Aboriginal Protection Act. I may well be wrong, and I am happy to be corrected.

Hi Bev,
:) I doubt Madge had Aboriginal heritage, but I have already given you some suggestions to follow through if you were to consider contacting NSW State Archives. Here's some other suggestions too :
;) https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/aboriginal-resources-overview-records

;) https://www.findandconnect.gov.au/guide/nsw/NE01008
May I mention that:
:) At the NSW BDM online index there's an option to check if any birth registration was indexed more than once. I can see that Doreen's birth registration number is 47584/1914 and it is indexed under both RILEY and DOOLAN. Doreen's father's given name is not displayed on the index. The actual registration should give further information, including the name of the person who registered that birth, and also which headings include either or both surnames.
:) I have checked my CD for the electoral roll of late 1913, for Emmaville (NSW ER 1913 GOUGH, polling Emmaville) and cannot see anyone with the surname DOOLAN or a variation of that surname, BUT ;D
** There are several with the surname HUGHES, and they are residing at Rose Valley.
** Perhaps as an aside, there are people listed at Rose Valley with the surname RUMMERY ** (Madge's mum's first marriage was to a Stephen RUMMERY, perhaps these Rose Valley people would be related to Madge's step father).
** There is just ONE entry for anyone with the surname RILEY.
It reads : Maud RILEY, Emmaville, domestic duties.
Please do remember that Doreen and her siblings were restored to their mum after a separation of less than three years and likely caused by the time needed for her recovery from her burns injuries. Medicine had not yet discovered penicillin or any antibiotics. It would have been a long slow and painful recovery for Madge.

Hi
Some questions for consideration ...
What responses did you receive from each of those organisations?
What is the exact details noted on the 1914 birth registration ... ?
What information did Doreen give about herself and her parentage when she married?
If Doreen was restored to her own mum in 1928 how does that support any suggestion about Stolen Generation ..... ???

Beve
Bev,
I have NOT said that he was of Australian aboriginal descent. I cannot see where I have said he was. I can find where I have suggested that it is unlikely.
I meant that, to me, it seems extremely unlikely that Doreen has an Aboriginal heritage coming from her mother or father, as the children were removed after her mum's hospitalisation and then restored after her recovery .... so NOT part of the stolen generation system... but if you follow up with any enquiries at NSW archives do mention both the two systems operating in NSW in the 1920s ... in respect of removing children from their mothers.
Do you have copies of any NSW bdm certification for your quest to prove descent from Stolen Generation?
Have you contacted the organisations mentioned throughout this long thread?
It can be very confronting to research without support, but I am sure there are support services with excellent help if you seek them out.

Bev

Hi there,
:) Maud RUMMERY married Hercules RILEY in 1905. NSW BDM #1265/1905.
:) Doreen's NSW birth registration (Emmaville district) is indexed under TWO surnames - mother as Madge RILEY and as Madge DOOLAN. NO father's name displayed online index. #47584/1914.
Earlier in this thread there's information about Doreen's siblings ... both older and younger, see for example, reply #29.
I cannot find anything to support Herbert RILEY being Doreen's Dad, so I have noticed Col Eckford's post of November 2016 and I am quoting part of Kath6740's post of May 1917. Doreen was her grandmother, so Kath would be closely related to you.
Hi all
My grandmother name is Doreen Jessie Riley. Her mother's name was Madge Hughes - Madge Riley - Madge Doolan as to which name she was I have no idea. As my grandmother, Doreen birth certificate says father unknown so they weren't married. My grandmother (Doreen) had brothers and sisters Doreen, Rita, Hazel, Robert, Cecil. These are the children we have found out that are Madge's children Children to Madge:
Gladys May Riley-6th January, 1910-father illegitimate Born In Glen Innes NSW
Ada Florence Daphne Riley-7th April 1911- father illegitimate- Born in Glen Innes NSW
Doris May Riley – 19th June 1912- father illegitimate- Born in Glen Innes NSW Doreen Jessie Riley- 22nd November 1914- father unknown – Born in Emmaville NSW
Rita Pearl Riley- 21st February 1917- father unknown- Born in Emmaville NSW
Hazel Lilly Riley- 2nd August 1918- father unknown- Born in Emmaville NSW
Robert Lloyd Riley- 30th November 1919- father unknown- Born in Emmaville NSW Cecil Keith Riley – 13th December 1920- father unknown- Born in Emmaville NSW. Robert James Riley – February 1922- Not sure about him?
My Grandmother was Doreen Jessie Riley
Born 22th November 1914 in Emmaville NSW
Married: John Elijah Bland on the 1st January 1934. St Paul’s Church EmmaVille NSW/ Church of England
.....
Col Eckford back in November 2016 noted :
The children were sent to the orphanage because their mother madge was badly burnt in a fire and Herbert return to Newcastle.
Children Doreen,Rita,Hazel,Robert,Cecil, birth are be 1914 to 1920.
My grandfather is Cecil the last child birth in 1920 he was fostered out
To the eckford family in Maitland.l don't know the orphanage name.
Doreen Jessie Riley birthday 22/11/1914
Rita Pearl Riley birthday 21/02/1917
Hazel Lilly Riley birthday 02/08/1918
Robert Lloyd Riley birthday 30/11/1919
Cecil Keith Riley birthday 13/12/1920
I don't know anything more thanks
In 1913, Hercules Ernest RILEY was working at the smelter at Cangai. NO mention of Madge or Maud RILEY there. (NSW Electoral Roll, CLARENCE, polling Cangai).
Why do you believe Herbert Riley was Doreen's dad?

Hi Bev,
May I suggest you please read back over this thread, it has a great deal of relevant and complicated detail.
Notice that several contributors show that the births of Doreen and her older and younger siblings were registered and are indexed at NSW BDM.
:) The father's given name is NOT included in the online indexes, and Madge was known by different surnames at different times, which of course suggests there would likely be different fathers for some of Doreen's siblings.
:) Doreen's birth is indexed under two surnames - RILEY and DOOLAN. This has been mentioned earlier in this thread. This alternative surname is significant. You need to consider that as early as Gladys birth (registered in 1910), that Doreen's mum was associating with a Mr DOOLAN and that she was no longer with a Mr RILEY. So:
:) :) :) births registered as DOOLAN and as RILEY include
1910, Gladys M # 3583, mum as Madge, Emmaville District
1911, Ada F #15379, mum as Madge, Emmaville Dist
1912, Doris M #28508, mum as Madge, Emmaville D.
1913, Lilian M, #33972, mum as Madge, Emmaville D
1914, YOUR GRANMOTHER, Doreen J, mum as Madge, Emmaville D
1917, Reta P, #13251, mum as Madge, Emmaville D
1918, Hazel L, #29852, mum as Madge, Emmaville D
So you may well need to be seeking out info about Mr DOOLAN, and I think you may need to let go of any searching for Herbert or Hercules RILEY.
You need also to consider that Gladys M, born in 1910 died while still an infant. Her death is indexed online under both RILEY and DOOLAN. No father's name recorded. Her mother's given name is recorded as Margaretta. NSW BDM online index #5228/1910, Emmaville. To me, without sighting the actual documents, but relying on the online index alone, I think Madge and her Mr Riley had separated before Gladys was born, and that Mr Doolan was Madge's common law partner and likely father of children whose births are registered under both RILEY and DOOLAN.
There's a further death registered in 1913, Emmaville district for a Dorothy M RILEY, mother as Margaretta, NO father's name recorded. #1681. The online index only has it the once, only as RILEY, but that is simply because Madge's formal/legal surname in 1913 was still RILEY as there was no divorce from Hercules.
Earlier in this thread I typed up the Electoral Roll entry for Maud RILEY, at Emmaville. Here it is again, with some other surnames re-checked today as well.
NSW ER 1913 GOUGH, polling at Emmaville.
Maud RILEY, (of) Emmaville, domestic duties.
NO OTHERS with that surname listed at that polling place.
Annie HERBERT, Emmaville, domestic duties
Joseph Henry HERBERT, Emmaville, miner
Thomas HERBERT, Emmaville, miner
Vera HERBERT, Emmaville domestic duties.
NO OTHERS with that surname listed at that polling place.
NO ONE with the surname DOOLAN or similar listed at that polling place
George HUGHES, (of) Rose Valley, miner
James HUGHES, Rose Valley, miner
Mary HUGHES, Rose Valley, domestic duties
Robert HUGHES, Rose Valley, miner
NO OTHERS with that surname listed at that polling place.

:) :) ;) From that birth certificate, what information did Madge give about the 'previous issue' of that marriage at St Paul's Emmaville ... (So does Doreen's birth cert actually give you the names/ages of her older siblings, if so, what names and ages are listed ?)
I have other questions about Doreen's birth certificate, but those two are the paramount ones at the moment.

Hi Bev,
I have already posted information (on this thead) from various official resources including electoral rolls re the surname DOOLAN in the years that births are indexed under both the surname DOOLAN and RILEY and with mum as Madge, and no father's given name on the online index.
do you have any info on mr doolan ?
bev
Please confirm YES/NO ... do you have Doreen's birth certificate.
If YES, where on that document is the surname DOOLAN mentioned, and what information did the informant provide re 'previous issue' of the marriage at Emmaville.

If NO, then may I suggest you order an official transcription of Doreen's NSW birth certificate. https://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyhistory#Oraskatranscriptionagent

I think you are saying that Doreen's birth certificate tells you that Madge was born a DOOLAN and became a RILEY when she married at St Pauls church, Emmaville and that Frederick and Cecilia LEWIS were present at Doreen's birth.
Can you confirm that?

wasnt married at st pauls church
bev where do i go from here

So from that birth certificate only ... what other information does it tell you?
These are the headings:
Date and place of birth of child
Name and whether present or not
Father's name, occupation, age and birthplace
Date and place of marriage - previous issue
Mother's name and maiden surname, age and birthplace
Informant
Witness
Particulars of registration
Name if added after Registration of birth.
JUST please be patient.... :)
so from Doreen's birth cert, what are some of the family history details that we can learn about Doreen's mum .... for example :
Mother's name and maiden surname, age and birthplace ,

Do you have any birth certificates for any of Doreen's brothers/sisters? If so, compare each item of info with Doreen's birth certificate.

Hi MJ
I have Doreen Jessie Bland Death certificate and on it it says that Robert Hughes is her father and madge is her mother,
Do you have anything on Mr Doolan? I am still trying for my aboriginally? will a DNA test prove anything.
Bev
-
Good Morning,
I have no knowledge of DNA testing.
The information on NSW bdm death certs about the parents of the person is not matched up by any authorities to NSW bdm births or marriages, and is simply collected by the funeral director when organising the funeral service. So it is not as reliable as you may actually expect.
Have you followed up on : Do you have any birth certificates for any of Doreen's brothers/sisters? If so, compare each item of info with Doreen's birth certificate.
Do not compare with info on any other document at the moment. Just looking for Madge RILEY formerly DOOLAN.

Hi Bev,
Back in September and October 2018 I posted on this very thread in response to your posts. I anticipated that you would have followed up with the suggestions I offered at that time re my thoughts
a) that Madge/Maud was not of Aboriginal descent. - She was eligible to vote in NSW State Elections (as Madge Riley until 1934 and then as Madge Hughes) (reply # 35)
b) I put together some info from several threads for family historians interests - basically the index references for a paper trail (reply # 36)
c) I reiterated that I doubted that Maud/Madge was of Aboriginal descent and noted that 'I cannot see any reason for Madge needing a Certificate of Exemption'. (reply # 38)
d) I provided live links to NSW State Archives indexes NRS-11 Applications for certificates of exemption 13-02-1930 to 21-12-1964 and NRS - 26 Ward Registers 18-01-1916 to 7-12-1928 and NRS-27 Indexes to ward registers 01-01-1916 to 31-12-1938 (reply # 38) so that if you contacted the State Archives you could ask about Certificates of Exemption, or State Wards Registers or similar.
e) I gave you direct live links to the NSW laws that applied when Doreen was a child- so live links to the NSW 1923 Child Welfare Act and the NSW 1918 Aboriginal Protection Act. (reply # 38)
f) and I noted ' For many decades in NSW children were removed from their mothers under the provisions of the Child Welfare Act. (reply # 38) ...
On Obtober 6, 2018 I posted further suggestions : (reply # 40)
Hi Bev,
:) I doubt Madge had Aboriginal heritage, but I have already given you some suggestions to follow through if you were to consider contacting NSW State Archives. Here's some other suggestions too :
;) https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/aboriginal-resources-overview-records

;) https://www.findandconnect.gov.au/guide/nsw/NE01008
......
Please do remember that Doreen and her siblings were restored to their mum after a separation of less than three years and likely caused by the time needed for her recovery from her burns injuries. Medicine had not yet discovered penicillin or any antibiotics. It would have been a long slow and painful recovery for Madge.
JM
At reply # 43 I provided you with live links to a number of submitted trees : here they are again.
At that time I suggested that perhaps you should consider contacting these tree owners who all seem to have researched Doreen Jessie or her husband’s ancestors:

What information on the 1902 birth cert from NSW bdm indicates to you that Mervin was a brother to Madge... I ask this question because the NSW BDM Online index has Madge as the given name for his mother on that birth registration 11288/1902.

Watch carefully for the exact spelling used in the following information gleaned from an online index:
Murvan DOOLAN, male, baptised 28 June 1902, Casino NSW Australia. Father as Murvan DOOLAN. FHL Film Number 993750.
FHL is an abbreviation for Family History Library. Here is a link : https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/NARA_and_FHL_Film_Numbers and here is a further link :

Hi,
From the NSW BDM birth certificate for Mervin (11288/1902) what is recorded under each of the headings:
(Back at reply #71 I typed up the headings)
JM
-
So from that birth certificate only ... what other information does it tell you?
These are the headings:
Date and place of birth of child
Name and whether present or not
Father's name, occupation, age and birthplace
Date and place of marriage - previous issue
Mother's name and maiden surname, age and birthplace
Informant
Witness
Particulars of registration
Name if added after Registration of birth.
......
JM
-
I should mention that there is an online tree showing a Qld marriage for Maud RUMMERY, daughter of Stephen and Amy (nee Skinner) and naming Madge DOOLIN as a half sibling for Maud.
Qld bdm have that marriage:
Maud RUMMERY, George Edward McMillan 28 July 1909, Brisbane #7869

For others following this thread, may I please mention that NSW BDM has indexed Doreen's birth registration (#47584/1914) twice, once under DOOLAN and once as RILEY, so a possible search for a baptism ought to consider both those surnames. Of course, perhaps more importantly, the likely denomination and likely locality may help so perhaps Bev may have some thoughts to add.
May I wish everyone Seasons Greetings this Advent season, and may 2021 bring good health to all.
Cheers,
JM.

Take a DNA test.
Despite the advertising, a DNA test is usually NOT a good way to find out ethnic percentages.
HOWEVER, as you are very intent on proving that you are of Aboriginal descent, then I suggest that a DNA test should show at least some trace.
Any percentages are likely to change as more people take the tests. It is not set in stone.
-
"you need every genuine document i.e. BMDs in your line from yourself back as far as you can.
A DNA test will probably give you a good estimate of your heritage but it won't help you (I don't think) in proving your possible Aboriginal descent?"
What I was suggesting is, the government will want documentation of your bloodline rather than Voters Rolls etc. which will be of no use in claiming Aboriginal descent.
I know there's a limit in cases (in different countries) as to the strength (for the want of a better word) of your descent...
I have no idea whether you need to prove your g/parent/g g/parent/g g g/parent or beyond is relevant as there does seem to be a cut-off in generations, if it makes sense?
It would be interesting to know what that actual relationship is for you & your assumed heritage i.e. what you believe to be which is Aboriginal?
However, whatever that relationship is, you'd still need the accompanying docs. to prove it & as there appears to be illegitimacy in your ancestral line, it may be very difficult to prove one way or another unless by direct maternal links?

I apologise for the likely duplication of info already posted earlier in this thread.
NSW BDM online index today includes the following birth registrations for the surname DOOLAN and mother as Madge, and without any named father. This is suggesting to me that Madge Doolan was the name she used from at least 1902 and likely was still using when Cecil K's birth was registered. ( ADD a note here, I have not yet checked, but I think all those births would be indexed under RILEY as well, so perhaps Bev can at least post the name recorded as the informant on Doreen's birth certificate ... as if that is Madge, then that would be the name she was using when registering Doreen's birth).
1902 #11288 Mervin, Casino district
1910 #3583 Gladys M, Emmaville district
1911 #15379 Ada F, Emmaville district
1912 #28508 Doris M, Emmaville district
1913 #33972 Lilian M, Emmaville district
1914 #47584 Doreen J, Emmaville district
1917 #13251 Reta P, Emmaville district
1918 #29852, Hazel L, Emmaville district
1921 #9716, Cecil K, Emmaville district.
I note that the NSW BDM online website, births, shows that there are pdf copies already readily available for the birth registrations for Mervin, Doreen and Cecil.
So if looking for baptism records for Doreen, I suggest start searching for the local church registers for Emmaville or Glen Innes... But I am not sure of what the denomination would be.
I have checked a tad further at NSW BDM online. The birth registration for Cecil is indexed FOUR times.... I am sure that there is just the ONE registration, numbered 9716/1921. His date of birth drills down to 13 December 1920. The year 1921 is the year the NSW BDM head office processed their paperwork.
DOOLAN Cecil K, Madge as mum, Emmaville district
ECKFORD Cecil Keith, neither parents named, Emmaville district
RILEY Cecil K, Madge as mum, Emmaville district
ECKFORD Cecil Keith, Madge as mum, Glen Innes district.
JM I have edited to add a comment re those birth registrations. It is 12:38 pm NSW daylight savings time.

Hi is george hughes brother robert hughes

-
Hi is g. xxx hughes brother r. Xxxz hughes
i think r. Xxxx was born 1960
he was going out with m.xxx r.xxx
Bev, four urgent questions re these three people ....
1. When did that G.xxx die?
2. When did that R.xxxx die?
3. What year was that M. Xxx going out with him?
4. When did that M.xxx die?
You say R.xxxz was born in 1960. It is against RootsChat rules for any of us to name living people in our posts. So please answer these four questions or remove their names by modifying your post.
This is very important. You need to sort this out within 24 hours from when you posted asking if George was Robert's brother.
JM.
Add ..... I have again read back over this thread .... So many questions asked, but never answered. But .... this is first mention for G.xxx ..... or for a person born as recently as 1960 or for info about someone going out with a person born 1960 .... to me, 'going out with" would be pointing to teenagers dating, so 1960s plus about 18 years brings these events into the late 1970s and early 1980s ..... all three of these people are likely to be still alive . .....
I will use R2M button to alert my concerns to our GM.

Bev Have you ever thought of getting someone who is interested in your family and ask them to personally assist you in-
*ANSWERING the questions which people have asked you in this thread in a complete way.
*Replying clearly to your helpers on this thread.
This would really assist in moving things forward because at the moment you are stuck, even though the answers might be just round the corner ;D

Hi Bev, Sue has offered good advice. Please consider it.
In the meantime, may I mention that the 1905 marriage is indexed as Hercules RILEY and Maud RUMMERY, registered Glen Innes, NSW Bdm 1265/1905, 15 January 1905.
There is a death indexed at NSW bdm for a Hercules RILEY aged 85 in 1955, registered Tamworth NSW 25567/1955

Bev,
Madge never married Herbert, so no divorce to look for. She married Hercules in 1905.
Please consider following all parts Sue's kind advice.
You need the 1905 marriage details about Hercules as it will give you details about his then age, place of birth and parent/s names.
With that information then you can research his dob.

Oh goodness me
What a convoluted thread this is. Questions asked and answer given time and time again.
In my research into Madge, I have found nothing to indicate her being of aboriginal decent.
She would not be registered to vote if she was.
Bev, please
Do a dna test, in the past year it is now possible to determine aboriginal blood.
I know this for a fact with Ancestry DNA, as one of my grandsons shows 2% his gggm was a half caste which is actually stated on her marriage certificate in Qld. She had to have permission to marry a white man and that is also stated on the marriage certificate.
Just because family folk law says your grandmother was of aboriginal decent does mean its true.
I like to thank everyone for their replies and patience on this thread
And I wish you all the best for 2021

Hi, have just recieved Hercules Riley death certificate and it says he was a widower, just wondering when he divorced madge riley
A widower is a male whose most recent marriage ended with the death of his wife.
The status of WIDOWER on an historic NSW BDM death registration is the status given by the informant identified on that registration. There was NO requirement for that status to be verified by the NSWBDM.

Hi Bev,
I had a look on 'findagrave.com' for CoE Cemetery, Tamworth but there's no entry for Hercules Riley unfortunately.
The cemetery has only been partially photographed (31%) which makes it difficult to know if Hercules had a headstone?
It may be worth sending an email with the info. you have from the DC to enquire about his burial & whether there's a headstone & a location in the cemetery?
He may not have had a stone but they may be able to give you further particulars?
Their email address is on here...

Hi now that I have Hercules rileys death cert does anyone know his birth date
Bev
-
Hercules died in 1955, does his DC give his age which will give you his approx. yr of birth?
I'd need to read over this thread but has it been mentioned previously where he was born to enable you to look for his birth?
Does his DC give the name of his parents?
Maybe you could supply all the details from the DC for people to help you including who the informant of his death was?
Annie
-
Hercules would have given details to the clergy when he married. The NSW bdm has that as registered Glen Innes district in 1905. #1265.
So he would have given his full name, age, place of birth, occupation, usual address, his parents names including mum's nee, his dad's occupation and confirmed if either were no longer living.

There is info on his death cert that will help find his details about his birth. If we can glean from the info given about his children, we may be able to find his place of birth on an online tree for that child.
If we have his place of birth we can start to look for his birth registration.
If we find it, we can give that to you.

Were James Riley and Mary Ann Bull

Click on : https://www.nsw.gov.au/topics/family-history-search
Then scroll through to "Start Searching Your Ancestry"
Then click on "Deaths"
Then enter BLAND at family name
DO NOT ENTER ANY OTHER NAMES at any other option.
Then scroll through to Date of Event "from" and ENTER the date to start searching. I suggest 01/01/1953.
Then go to the Date of Event "to" and ENTER the date to stop the search at. I suggest 31/12/1954.
Then scroll further to the heading 'District' and enter EMMAVILLE.
You should have just the TWO responses.
Gloria Jean BLAND's d.c. is reference 6354/1955 (so it was registered in 1955, but death occurred in late 1954)
Marell BLAND d.c. is reference 32606/1953.
When seeking NSW BDM registrations, I prefer the cheaper option to the real deal expensive certificates. NSW BDM has their contact details :

RChat has their details too. https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,300394.0.html
