Title: 48 Jane street Leith.
Post by: unknownmale on Tuesday 16 September 14 12:57 BST (UK)
Hi folks, wondering where  I might obtain some pictures of the above address in and around 1901. One of my relatives lived there at that time. He was described as an omnibus driver. previously described  as a car driver. )1897) I also wonder what companies may have been around at that time where he may have worked.

Thanks ,Unknownmale.

No pic, but you will find Jane Street in the top left corner of this large-scale map from the end of the 19th century.

No. 48 was probably in the L-shaped group of tenements on the corner.

And "car" here means a tram.

Ah ! GR2, thank you I did think that but it means so much to have it confirmed. The person concerned was described on hie Dau. birth cert. 1897 as a car driver, then an omnibus driver in the 1901 census. Have been looking to see what companies were abt. then. I knew they were called tramcars, but I see this e.g. The first motor-bus service, from the Post Office to Haymarket, was introduced as early as 1898.  This used a fleet of Daimler cars with wagonette bodies. So much digging to do. again thank to you and this amazing site.

Googling that address "hits" two families living there about that time:  BURNESS and ADDISON. Likely no connection but might be worth a quick look.

A great/best place to always start searches is www.edinphoto.org.uk

A couple of results showing for

www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_edin_t/0_edinburgh_transport_cars_vans_lorries_-_bruce_peebles_transformer_for_portobello_power_station_1952.htm#start

and

Also, www.henniker.org.uk/images/places/local_a/leith/manderston-st.jpg - This is how it used to look, back in 1978. That's Leith Walk along at the end of the road. The arches were part of the railway, which crossed Leith Walk on the bridge adjacent to Jane Street.

www.edinphoto.org.uk/0_street_l/0_street_views_-_leith_walk_parade_boys_brigade_leith_1_062998.htm - The parade passes under the railway bridge beside Jane Street, near the foot of Leith Walk

Not in the period you are looking at though...and more surrounding streets rather than actual shots of Jane Street...

Monica  :)

PS: I will stop now..I can research photos for ever  ::)
