Title: Maiden names help
Post by: sirsimon on Tuesday 16 September 14 16:44 BST (UK)
Hello

This is going to probably be my last post for some time and its quite a large request

William Steel, born in 1828 had a wife named Bridget, this is them in 1861 in Nafferton.

Head   William Steele   35
Wife   Bridget Steele   27
Son   Richard Steele   18
Son   William Steele   8
Daughter   Margaret Steele   6
Daughter   Mary Steele   3
Daughter   Jane Steele    1

Richard Steel, William's brother was born in 1811 and had a wife named Jane. This is the family in Newcastle, 1861

Head   Richard Steel   48
Wife   Jane Steel   40
Son   Adam Steel   10
Son   George Steel   9
Son   Leonard Steel   5
Son   Thomas Steel   3

Thomas Steel, born in 1858 to Richard Steel and Jane married a woman named Isabella. This is them in 1881. One of their children was Isabel Moscrop Steele. Now I assumed that Moscrop was her mother's maiden name, but I cannot find a marriage record that fits chronologically.

Head   Thomas Steel   24
Wife   Isabella Steel   27
Daughter   Jane Steel   5
Son   Robert Arthur Steel   3
Son   John Steel   1
Brother in Law   James ???   18
Servant   Isabella ???   15

My request is would someone please help in finding the maiden names of the three wives, Bridget, Jane and Isabella? I have checked free bmd with little success, I am probably missing some things.

I appreciate any assistance in finding them, I do not want to go through the necessary expense of purchasing certificates.

my thanks

Freebmd is the website to use for this type of query

If you are unable to resolve it that way - then you will need to buy a copy of one of the childrens birth certs from each family which will give you the maiden names

The census doesn't say Isabella aged 15 years is Isabella Moscrop Steele. She is a servant to the family.  Someone has made an alteration to the name on ancestry. It looks as if she was the daughter of Thomas Moscrop and Mary born 12 April 1866.
Its very unclear what the surname of the servant is.
Following the family forward they do have a daughter later called Isabella Moscrop Steel.

Please read the census properly. This family are in Bewcastle in 1861 not Newcastle.

Bewcastle is a large civil parish in the City of Carlisle district of Cumbria, England.

Brother in Law James 18 in 1881 - surname looks like Moscrop to me. Have you looked for a possible Isabella Moscrop in 1871?

If you can't find a marriage (I can't see one of a Thomas Steel(e) to an Isabella anything either) perhaps they didn't marry.

Jan ;)

Richard Steel, William's brother was born in 1811 and had a wife named Jane. This is the family in Newcastle, 1861

This couple appear on the 1851 census , their eldest child showing is 11.  It is more than likely that they married before registration. Have you got them in 1841

ADDED they appear on the 1841 with son  age 9 months.

freeBMD is showing the marriage of an Isabella Moscrop in Carlisle R.D. in the 3rd quarter of 1875.

On the same page they show the names of three women and only two men, so possibly the missing man's name is Thomas Steele?

According to a family tree entry Isabella Moscrop married Arthur Steel in 1875 (which would be the Carlisle 10b 710 entry - Sept 1875) and then Thomas Steel at Gretna Green, Dumfries-shire 10 May 1880.

Sandra

Added : Gretna Green Marriage Registers show the marriage Isabel Steel to Thomas Steel both of the Parish of Kirkandrews Cumberland - 10 May 1880
Witness George Moscrop and John Telford.

thank you

Sorry for any confusion, I meant to say Bewcastle, not Newcastle and Isabella Moscrop Steele was born in 1901 in Brampton, she is in the 1911 census with the family

Looking at the census, you guys are right, James's last name does look like Moscrop, but its so faded that it cannot be certified.

I think the best thing would be to get the certificates

Where did you find the tree?

If    it's the same one I've   found , it's on Ancestry ,   Arthur  Steel   dies  in 1878 ,  Isabella  and  Arthur    had  2  children  Jane  ,  1875 -1950, and Robert Arthur  1877-1972  There's  a picture of Isabella  and  one  of   her  daughter Jane   and  her  family

The family tree was on ancestry.

Arthur Steel died Q4 - Dec 1878 - Longtown - 10b 303

Possibly the first 2 children - Jane and Robert Arthur Steel were the children of Isabella and Arthur Steel but only the birth certificates will tell you for certain.
Isabella did not marry Thomas Steel 10 May 1880 so likely the next child John was the first result of that union.
