Could any one please tell me what 'The Pitt' is? My great grandparents Banns where posted there and my great grandmother used it as her address.
The only reference I have found is to 'a pitt full of water that thieving women were dunked in'

Hi, what is your source, ie. is it something transcribed or an original document? If original, is there any doubt at all over what it says?

It's from a marriage extract under 'where, when and how married', 'at The Pitt in the parish of Kirkgunzeon, after banns according to the forms--------------' in 1899. The Pitt, Kirkgunzeon is also given as the lady's 'Usual residence'. The marriage was registered in Kirkguneon by Robert Milligan (registrar). It is also very clear.
I'm really new to all this so just trying to find my way around, but have spent half a day trying to find out about 'The Pitt' and can't get anything.

Just found out that the lady in question was married at home so 'The Pitt' is likely to be a farmhouse or Hamlet. Still can't reference it though.

PS I found reference to a sandpit in Bargrug south of Kirkgunzeon in the property index of the Registers of Scotland.
What was your great grandmother's name? And when was the marriage?

In the 6 inch 1843 - 1882, just South of Kirkgunzean station, there is a building named "Mossfoot", and just South of that, there is a larger building adjacent to "Old Gravel Pit". I wonder if thats it.

The great grandmother I am looking for is Jane Gibson, she seems to have moved to Kirkgunzeon from Penpont between 1897 and 1899 and married my great grandfather William Kirkpatrick of Caerlavrock there in 1899. She also had a son William Gibson in 1897 and they had all moved to Southwick by the 1901 census.

"Pitt" is not marked on any OS map that I have found, but it is recorded on John Ainslie's Map of the Southern Part of Scotland (http://maps.nls.uk/view/74400286). "Pitt" was located approx 1.3mls NNE of Kirkgunzeon to the west of the road to Milton.
On the above map it lies between the properties Craigley, to the NW, and Whitehill to the SW of it.

I found Pitt or Pit on both maps, it looks like it is probably a farm but expect it's name has changed or it is gone.
I've saved the link to both maps as my family seems to have moved around a fair bit and they are more detailed than most maps.

Good finds Istrice, didn't think of looking at the older maps. Just for any readers of the post in the future - Pitt is actually NNW of Kirkgunzeon ;)
