Title: John Mann 1899-1954
Post by: sue21757 on Wednesday 24 September 14 05:04 BST (UK)
Hi,
I am looking for a marriage in Belfast for a John Mann(born C1899) and Alice McMullan(Born 1912) in the early 1940's.
John is meant to have been in the Navy and died 24/6/1954 on board ship from appendicitis.Don't know where the death would have been registered.
There were three girls born in the 1940's to this couple.
Not sure where John was born and i am not having any luck with a marriage.
Thanks in advance.
Just been on the Northern Ireland Site and realised i can only get marriages up to 1939. so will have to wait a bit
Sue

following on dathai most likely family and searching for ballydown, I came across
http://www.libraryireland.com/UlsterDirectory1910/Islandmagee.php
Mann, David, sailor, Ballydown
Mann, David, master mariner, Corner house
Mann, John, master mariner, Hillview cottage, Cloughfin
Mann, William, master mariner, Millbay
Mann, Thomas, sailor, Ballytober
A remarkable record for a surname occupation in a small community. I quickly became convinced he must have a record in Kew London as Merchant men and officers were highly prized by the Royal Navy Reserve, but I was unsuccessful.

Some  Church records exist ISLANDMAGEE, CO. ANTRIM as found on PRONI website

Northumberland Street
from 148 Shankill Road to 1 Falls Road
a John Mann is living at No80 in 1943 No occupation is filled in.

Would a Larne newspaper have reported his obituary?

I also found an interesting article but with no mention of him there here http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~econnolly/oextracts/oeislemageememoriam.html
but it mentions the book "History of Islandmagee" by Dixon Donaldson (1927)

Hi All,

Thanks so much for your help.
I have spoken to the person i am helping and she is not sure if he was born in Ireland.
Family have said that his fathers name was Jack and he had brothers Jimmy and Joseph.
Might have to leave this one until i can find a marriage for the couple.
The address looks interesting in 1943 as there is a J Mullan further up the road. Maybe Alice's father.

Cheers Sue

For marriages post 1939, you have to either go into GRONI in Belfast and look them up there, or contact them, and they will search for you (for a fee).

Don't know if it helps but I sailed with brothers  John(ny) and Dave(y) Mann from Islandmagee in the late 60s , early 70s.
They were both A.Bs . working for Shell Tankers .
I heard John was later lost at sea in the Bay of Biscay .

Hello Rose, I never sailed with your Dad but I sailed with John and David. Am I correct in my memory that they never sailed together in case they had a brotherly fall out?
Also a Captain from the same area called Campbell Kerr.
