Title: Confusion concerning census relations
Post by: sirsimon on Sunday 28 September 14 16:51 BST (UK)
Hello

William H Lacey was born in 1873, this is him and his family in 1881, 1891 and 1901.

1881

Head   John Sheppard   27
Wife   Mary Sheppard   28
Son   Henry Sheppard   6
Daughter   Reziah Sheppard   4
Daughter   Elizabeth Sheppard   2
Daughter   Margrate Sheppard   2 months
Son-in-Law   Sarah Lacey   30
Nephew   William H Lacey   8
Niece   Rosa Lacey    4

1891

Wife   Sarah Farthing   39
Step-son   William H Lacey   18
Step-daughter   Rosa Lacey   14
Daughter   Emily A Farthing   2
Daughter   Eliz J Farthing   1 month
Nephew
   William Farthing   19
Lodger   William Watts   25

1901

Head   William Lacey   28
Wife   Charlotte Lacey   25
Daughter   Emily A Lacey   2
Daughter   Annie Lacey   8 months

Concerning the 1881 and 1891 census, I am confused concerning the relationships. Both censuses do not show any parents for William, but do mention a Sarah Farthing, a step mother and a John Sheppard, an uncle, which I assume means William and Rosa's mother was a sister of his.

Looking at the marriages, I cannot find a marriage between a Sarah Farthing and a man with the surname Lacey.

I am trying to look for William and Rosa's parents, any help in clearing up this confusion will be appreciated

my thanks

In 1881 Sarah Lacey is transcribed as the daughter-in-law (but image shows s-in-law - as JJen pointed out later) and a widow.  Free BMD show a marriage in December 1881 of Sarah Lacey to Uriah Farthing - Pontypool - 11a 197.
William and Rosa Lacey are the children of Sarah Lacey.

Looking at the image for the 1881 Sarah is recorded as S in law, therefore possibly sister in law.

Yes, it does look like that on the image. Anc have transcribed her as daughter-in-law.  ::)

1891 - Emily A Hall is Emily Farthing on the image - Probably Emily Farthing - Bedwelty - 11a 65 - Dec 1888.
Eley is also marked as Eley Fathing on the image.

Eley Hall is probably Eliz Jane Farthing born June 1891 - Bedwelty - 11a 78
Had to read but mis-transcribed on anc.
Sarah Hall is Sarah Farthing on the image. She is in a different household to Charles Hall.
Sarah resides 18 Club Row.  Charles Hall resides 17 Club Row  ::)

You need to check those images Simon. Mistakes are made. You could have worked it all out for yourself had you done that.

thank you

sorry I didn't correct the mistranslations. I knew there were some before I posted, but forgot to change the census as they should have been

So William's parents were Uriah Farthing and Sarah Lacey, but they adopted their mother's surname?

I checked free bmd and couldn't find a death for Uriah

That is absolutely awful -  >:( >:( >:(

Try Uriah Farthing - aged 88 years - Bridgend - 11 a 894 - he seems to fit

William Lacey and Rose Lacey were born before the marriage of Sarah Lacey and Uriah Farthing.
Don't forget the 1881 census says Sarah is widowed - so there was another marriage. Perhaps birth cert of William H Lacey will through more light on who his father was.

There is a marriage of a John Lacey -

q4 1870, Pontypool, Vol11a Page 231

On the same page is a Sarah Harvey

Death of John Lacey age 30 -

q2 1877, Bedwelty, Vol11a Page 59

So possibly these are the parents of William and Rosa, however to confirm who the parents are you would need to purchase a birth cert.

Got the birth certificate of Rosa Lacey today, William's sister, Jen is right, their parents are John Lacey and Sarah Harvey  :)

From this we now know that Sarah remarried Uriah
