Patrick Mcloughlin was born in Castlebar 1904. He married Sarah Garvey in Liverpool 1929. He had a brother named Billy who also lived in Liverpool. He possibly appears on the 1911 census of Ireland in Collagh, Meelick, Mayo. Any help in finding further detail and family much appreciated.

Hi,
There is an ancestry tree for the couple with all the children listed - appears they had 9 children - 5 male and 4 females. It shows 2 deaths - one for an infant Anthony McLouglin born and died in 1936. The other was a daughter Marie Josephine McLoughlin born 10 Sep 1934 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England and died 29 Dec 2003 in Liverpool, Lancashire. Married to
Dennis Reid born 13 Jul 1933 in Liverpool, Lancashire, England and died 17 Mar 2012 in Liverpool, Lancashire.

Hi John,
Do you have his marriage details? If so, what was his father's name?

Only the free index. I will have to apply for a copy from the GRO.

That certainly looks a possibility in 1911 but you definitely need his father's name and occupation. Luckily the one you have there has an easily identified occupation. :)

Hi John
Once you get the marriage cert. for Patrick to confirm his father's name and occupation check out the following.
1911 census Collagh Meelick Mary Mullin grandmother children as you say listed includes Patrick aged 7 and a William aka Billy aged 13. and others.
If you check 1901 census Shamble St Castlebar John Mcloughlin RC age 25 wife Nora 24 children William 3 Mary Agnes 2 Margaret Josephine. John is shown as a Printer Compositer.
By 1911 the children are with the grandmother in Meelick, but if you search for John he is living with his own parents in Shamble St Castlebar, William Mcloughlin wife Mary son John 30 compositer. He is shown as married not a widower but I cant see a Nora Mcloughlin listed in Census. Don't take notice of the age for persons in the 1901-1911 Irish Census they are often more of less than ten years out.
Listed on the Mayo Ancestors site is a marriage in 1897 of John Mcloughlin and a Nora Mullin.
If you find John is the father of Patrick, you will see that William and Mary Mcloughlin have 9 children all alive in 1911 some are listed at home in 1901 may help you trace siblings.

Thank you very much!
I had seen the 1911 Collagh Meelick census and the 1901 possible link in Shamble St Castlebar. I wasn't able to find a Mcloughlin Mullin marriage which proves the link. Still awaiting delivery of the marriage cert so fingers crossed.
Cheers

Hi John
The 1901 census for Mary Mullin is spelt as MullEn living in same place, husband Michael child Jane, she is shown aged 9 years and aged 23 in 1911 she could be a grandchild not daughter.
You could purchase the marriage of 1897 and confirm Nora's father and address at marriage, though the mother is not listed on it.
-
Good news. Marriage cert arrived and Patricks father is indeed John (printer, journeyman). Thats certainly got the ball rolling. Thanks again for all your help.

The Marriage record for John McLoughlin and Norah Mullin 14 Nov 1897 gives Johns Address as Shamble Street , occupation Printer and Norah as a live in Servant in the Asylum. Was there an asylum in Castlebar?

Hello,
Yes there was - if you search there are various articles and references to it on the internet. There is one here (http://stmarysspanishflu.weebly.com/castlebar-asylum-and-the-flu.html)
