Title: BMD records
Post by: peramar on Wednesday 01 October 14 18:56 BST (UK)
I am just starting researching a family who lived on the Island from 1880.  Please can someone tell me how I can obtain any BMD certificates and any wills and details of the costs etc.

Thank you in anticipation

Cannot answer question about cost. Do you know about the iMuseum? Do a search for "Isle of Man Museum". Have found many of my ancestors there.

Certificates are available from the Isle of Man Civil Registry (Oik-Recortyssee):

http://www.gov.im/registries/general/civilregistry/copy_certificates.xml
They cost £10 each, but a search fee may also apply?

iMuseum is found at www.imuseum.im

Or just ask away! Some of us live on the island, and may be able to help! ;D

Thank you very much all of you for your help.  It is very much appreciated.

I am researching the Purcell family on the Island and I now have a marriage 11 July 1886 at St Maughold's RC Church between Patrick James Purcell and Catherine Keenan.  In the 1891 census Patrick or James, as he seems to be calling himself, is a Hotel Keeper at the Central Hotel Lezayre.  My problem is that I am unable to find a birth for Patrick/James in about 1855 in Birkenhead/Liverpool.  So, I need to acquire a marriage certificate for him to see what details are available about his Father. Thank you for your offers of help but am not sure what help you can give me at this time.

Hi

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874/5 so that is probably why you can't find a registration for him

The Central was in North Ramsey - in fact only just as the bridge marking boundary is where Bowring Road starts
(presume you have looked at directories on www.manxnotebook.com - most of Ramsey (ie the majority south of river) is in parish of Maughold) - tho the address of the Central seems to change somewhat tho always in same general area - the Inn is clearly marked on 1868 O/S plan as  just on the west side immediately north of bridge - you can find this + quite a bit of other material on my CD Rom of ManxNoteBook..
also suggest a short term subscription to manx Newspapers at www.imuseum.im assuming you are not on Island(free if you are at iMuseum or manx Museum library as Publicans often feature in such

A Miss Euphemia Purcell is a baker/confectioner in Dale street in Ramsey in 1894 - a May Purcell won the Baume scholarship To Royal College of Music in 1908 (should be plenty in newspaper)

Thank you again for all your help.

Blue -I had found a Patrick in the 1861 census but was confused about his Mother's name.  I think you are probably right with all the information you have given to me but I may have difficulty proving it which is why I may have to purchase the marriage certificate for Patrick James and Catherine keenan as that may give me his Father's occupation.  However, if his Father died, as we think, when Patrick was only about 1, he may not have known his Father's occupation.  Also, Patrick and Catherine only had 2 daughters, Mary Ellen 11 Sep 1890 and Catherine Jane 3 July 1895 and I would have expected one of them to be named after Patrick's Mother.  Will keep me busy trying to link all this!

Thanks again
