Title: Help reading Fathers name pleas
Post by: kellymasters on Thursday 02 October 14 08:46 BST (UK)
Could someone please help me decipher the writing under Nora. The name has been crossed out. Mothers name is Lizzie LIGHTFOOT. Nora's birthdate is 25 April 1887. Her baptism was in Birminghman, St Paul, Warwickshire, England.

Thanks Kelly

Are you able to post a snip of the record please - not the whole page - I, for one, can't access Ancestry so can't help - though I do enjoy trying to decipher things.   ;)

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

This person can be found on Ancestry as Nora MOORE. The surname Lightfoot isn't given inthe register.

I think the word crossed out is Maud (i.e. a second Christian Name).

Thank you.

Yes she appears in the baptism as Nora MOORE, and in the 1891 census  she is living with her grandmother. In the 1901 census she is still listed as Norah LIGHTFOOT. Her mother Lizzie MOORE married William Charles LIGHTFOOT in 1890.

Welcome from me too  :)

Agree that there is no mention of Lightfoot.  Child is Nora with Maud crossed out. Mother is Lizzie Moore.

So the Maud would be a middle name?

That's what I suggested in reply #2  :)

It might have been but was crossed out by the parish clerk for some reason - maybe Lizzie decided against it.

Where did you find the Lightfoot name?

Ok so the LIGHTFOOT name is coming from:
she is on the census in 1911 living with her mum Lizzie LIGHTFOOT and Lizzies husband William Charles LIGHTFOOT as Nora Lightfoot

1901 census in hospital as Norah LIGHTFOOT

1891 census living with grandparents as Nora MOORE

Her mother married in 1890 to William Charles LIGHTFOOT.

There is no father shown so the child would have taken to Mother's surname of Moore. Perhaps the mother (Lizzie) said to the clerk "the child's name is Norah Moore" and they thought she was saying "Norah Maud' with Maud as a middle name. That's why it was then crossed out.
Title: Completed
