Title: Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells
Post by: KiwiHugh on Monday 06 October 14 09:49 BST (UK)
I am having some highly likely results for deaths coming up in Tonbridge. Verbal history (always dangerous info) says they lived in Tunbridge Wells. Maps take forever on my dial up. Can someone tell how far apart these places are and hence the likely hood of someone in Tunbridge showing up in Tonbridge. There is the issue of the giver of the info speaking English and the receiver speaking Kiwi ::)

Hi Hugh

The towns are about 5 miles apart.

Do remember that Tunbridge Wells was in the Registration District of Tonbridge.

Glad to have helped. :)  I remember being very confused about Tonbridge/Tunbridge and Tunbridge Wells when I first started researching my family in that area.

It doesn't help that Tonbridge is pronounced Tunbridge. ;D  I suspect if someone moved away from the area, there could be issues as to which was actually written on census returns because of the pronunciation. :-\

All points up the need for precision in answering the question "where was he/were you born!
My own history confused me until I began the roots business and started to understand registration districts.  I was born in Pembury hospital (village 3 miles east of TW), home was in Tunbridge Wells and, as said, the reg district is Tonbridge (5.3 m north of TW).  So where was I born, depends what the reason is for asking I suppose.
