Title: Calder/Robb from Elgin - looking for info
Post by: AbiLynne on Wednesday 08 October 14 18:51 BST (UK)
Hello everyone!

I'm looking for information on my ancestors from Elgin, Scotland.

I have determined the following information, which I can only hope is correct.

James Calder married Margaret Robb in 1810 in Alves, Morray, Scotland.

Their son William, born in Elgin in 1819, emigrated to Ontario, Canada in approx. 1835/1836.

If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would very much appreciate that.

Regards,
AbiLynne

Hi,
I'm currently looking at a Robb family from Moray / Banffs for Rainne on here.  She has Robb family in that area around that era.  I'll keep it in mind as I carry out searches.

There is a free site which gives a great deal of information about people from Moray and allows you to search using different criteria. If you have not already done so, have a look at Libindx.

I'm doing too much at once and forgetting why I'm looking at this name.  ::)

It may be we have a connection here going back a generation or two from 'your' Margaret Robb
I just remembered that I have Robb or Rob in my own line although I've only just set out researching that line and have limited info.

My 4 x great grandmother was an Isobel Robb (Rob on OPR of her marriage on 15 June 1789 in Drainie to Alexander Sutherland, Robb on later documents I have).
That record shows she was "in" Alves.

I do not have details of her birth, but using the traditional Scottish naming pattern, I suspect she is the Isobel Rob christened 1765 to William Rob and Margt. Millart.

From FamilySearch.org, William and Margt. had a number of children, 2 girls and 3 boys, christened 1760 to 1765 in Elgin:
Alexr. 1760
Elspet 1763
George 1765
Isobel 1765 (who I suspect is my 4 x g grandmother)
David 1768

This is far as I've got at this stage but it is feasible that one of the boys, or even Elspet if she had an iligitimate child, is the grandparent of your Margaret Robb married in 1810 in Alves, potentially making her the great niece of my ancestor.

I'm unsure when I'll have time to continue this line of research.  I only started it last week but have been busy since.  I hope to get back to it within the next day or so.

I'll let you know, but it would be great to know whether you find out more as we might be able to collaborate.

Dave

Thanks for the suggestion.  I found my 2nd G.Grandfather, William Calder (Libindx# NM025025).

Now the trick is to find his parents.

My data on them is based on another Calder in Ontario who has done extensive research on the family, but only got that far back on this branch.

Thanks again and I'll keep you all posted.

Rainne, it's better at this stage if we don't bring your Mary Robb into this thread.  She's already been covered in great detail on your other thread.  At this point, there is nothing to connect her to AbiLynne's James Calder / Margaret Robb.

If you do mention people in a thread that have been mentioned before, it's good practice to post a link to the thread to avoid duplication of effort.

For reference, the thread about MARY Robb and her family is here..... http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=695234.msg5388052#msg5388052
