My grandfather is listed on th 1911 census in Glasgow as an inmate. Does that mean he was in prison?

Not necessarily. It could be a workhouse, maybe hospital, or other institution. Have you got an address?

Not necessarily. The clue might be in his address.
He may have been in the workhouse for example.
Can you give us his name, date and place of birth and any other details so we can have a look?

It could also mean someone who lies in a house with others similar to a housemate today. Looking at the census and others at that address will help.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies, unfortunately the census page I viewed did not show the address, only names of men with inmate , marital status, etc.
He was born Hugh Campbell, 1870 presumably glasgow, other census records show him with father Bernard,mother Sarah and sibling John at East Milton Street, Glasgow.
He was married to Esther Nicoll at Lochee, 6th Oct 1906, had a son Bernard (my father) 29th March 1909 at Plean, Stirlingshire, this is the last record I have of them as a family, the 1911 census shows Bernard staying with another family, Hugh Harking head, at Corn Street, Glasgow.
As already stated Hugh as an inmate. I have viewed 1 record
Of death in 1910 for Esther Campbell (Nicoll) in Ferry Port On Craig (tayport).

There were two - both same age and name.
This one could be him - header says Stobhill General Hospital, widower, b. Glasgow.
Other one is in a Lodging house, single, b. Ireland.
So neither are in prison.

Thanks Gadget, didn't realise what free header was.The Hugh Campbell b Glasgow looks like my grandfather, this ties in with a record I have of his death in Bonhill Poor House , glasgow 1915, so another gap filled.
