Good evening all
I'm trying to find more details about Sidney William Stock. He married Lilian Gosling (1915-2011) on 8 April 1933 and was recorded as aged 20 and his occupation was recorded as a lorry driver. He had four children with Lilian: Douglas (1933-2002), Mervyn (1934-2001), Margaret (b 1937) and Peter (b 1939).
His father is recorded as Albert Stock (deceased) who was an engineer.
Ancestry's GRO has not thrown up any records that match his name, but a FreeBMD search returned one result that matched between 1912 and 1915:
Stock Sidney W Keen Bridgend 11a 1368
Ancestry returned one result for Sidney Stock on a British Army WW1 Pension Record, with the father recorded as Albert.
Many thanks in advance.

If Sidney was born c1913 he was far too young to have entered WW1! (1914-1918)

Hi, sorry for the confusion. The WW1 record was for Albert Stock, but had his wife Lily and children Winifred and Sidney recorded on it.

It looks like Albert Edward Stock died 1922?
Albert's wife is Lucy on military records and transcribed as Lily on FreeBMD

Thanks for all the info you've provided so far. I'm still unsure if this is the correct person though.
His marriage certificate states his age as 20 in 1933, which would put his birthday as c1913, yet all these records point to the birth of someone c1914. Is this likely to be the result of some sort of clerical or information error?
-
Could you post details from marriage cert?
Father's name & occ witnesses etc
noone checked ages given on marriage -and age on death is the age given by informant
Also trancribing errors can be made on marriage cert copies
My grandfather was 36 when he married and when |i obtained his marriage cert (copy) his age had been entered as 30 -the 6 being mistaken for 0

Birth reg's for Sidney William Stock -the only one is Dec qtr 1914 -which has previously been posted for you
The only other c 1913/4 I could find was
Sidney William Stocks 1912 Watford reg dist
His father was Thomas Stocks -mother Lily Foster
Lily had several children possibly from previous marriage?
Thomas & Lily married Watford Reg office 8 Jun 1905
It looks like Sidney William Stocks died Sept 1982 age 70 Honiton Devon - hio.b. given as 8 Jun 1912
so father on marriage cert should give clue as to which Sidney??

That rather depends on when his birthday was?
My birthday is in June.
So, any records this year before my birthday will show me as 60 ( and born 1954!).
Any records after my birthday will show me as 61 (and born 1953!).
-
So, if his birthday was 1 November 1914 and the date of marriage was 8 April 1933, then that would make him 18??
-
Based on the information I have, what is the likelihood that this is the same person and his age was incorrectly recorded when he was married?
-
To me it seems you have the correct family
The age recorded on marriage cert would be the age he gave -
Could you post names of witnesses from marriage cert?
And do you know of any siblings he had?

Hi Suz
The names of the witnesses look like William Thomas and Ambrose Skuse.
I don't know if he had any siblings, but the BMD search does throw up 4 sisters when searched with the surname Stock and mother's maiden name of Keen between 1908 and 1940.
Their names are: Winifred F, Ivy G, Lily K, and Doris G. Their births were all registered in Bristol, but Sidney's was registered in Bridgend.

We know Winifred Florence was his sister -she was on their father's military records and recorded as b Bristol -Sidney was b. Ogmore Vale Glamorgan and his father address as llewellyn St Ogmore Vale -so maybe they married in Bristol area moved to Ogmore Vale for a while before moving back to Bristol
Can't anyone in your family remember any mention of Aunts or Uncles?
There is an Ambrose Skuse in Bristol who looks a candidate for one of the witnesses - he married Sept qtr 1933 (few months after Sidney) wonder if they were related or just friends?

why did you look for children between the years 1908-1940?
Sidney's parents married 1911 and his father died 1922 age 30

I've tried not to make any assumptions that I'm on the right track, hence the broad date range on the BMD search. It does seem that it is the right person though.

Hi, I've just come across this post from 2014, so I expect you have had further info since.
my mother was Winifred Stock (deceased) and her brother was Sidney Stock. He emigrated to Australia and the family including his mother, lost all contact until the Salvation Army located him. He had become a successful businessman, something to do with coaches, but never returned to the U.K. Hope this is of some help.
