Hi Ros
You were kind enough to look up the Probate record of my John Colvin a few days ago and I found a great deal of information from this. I wonder if you would be so kind as to look for the record of his wife Sarah Jane Colvin who died on 15.9.1935. Probate was granted on 22.11.1935. The Series is 4-208691 and the Record Series 13660. I might be able to find out more on the remaining family from this.
Many thanks again.

Hi rosball
Thanks very much for these offers. I am trying to find out who my 5xgreat uncle Edward Childs wife and daughter was as he was admitted to Parramatta Asylum in 1891 aged 74 and died in November that year. He was a convict from Felsted, Essex, England born about 1817 and the asylum records say he was a shoemaker and a widower with 1 daughter, no names of his daughter mentioned.
He was in Port Macquarie in 1843 when he was given a ticket of leave. His cert of freedom was granted in 1849.
I did find a possible Edward Childs marriage in 1866 to a Margaret Cooper in Rylstone,NSW, is there a chance you could look up the details of this marriage for me if possible?
Or any Port Macquarie marriages post 1843?

Hi could I ask another favour
I am after the probate records of
Eliza LEE died 6 June 1881 at Petersham
I have found 2 entries on the NSW Archives Records
when I use "name search" this comes up
LEE Eliza Petersham 06/06/1881 30/07/1881 [19/10182] 3025 No Duty Paid File. File now at Z02499 [20/6986]
when I use the "Investigator"this comes up
Series 3-5763 Eliza Lee Date of death 6 June 1881, Granted on 29 June 1881
Record series containing this item: 13660 Probate packets
Access directions: 359
I hope this may make sense , I have no clue as to what this means.
regards
Cass
-
Hi Cass,
The first one is the deceased estate file (details of assets and debts) and the second is probate file with will and family details and also details of assets and debts. (my rough explanation - please feel free to correct me).
These days they only keep the probate file as it contains most of what is in deceased estate file anyway.
I'll put the probate file on higher priority. :)
I hope to get there next week ... :)
cheers,
Ros
-
Many thanks, the probate file will be wonderful

Hi Ros,
Is it possible to check for a probate in 1985? I don't know if they're available or even if they're indexed?
It's for Alastair Frederick George Brooks - he died 23 July 1985 in Leura NSW. His next of kin was his widow, Marjorie Brooks.
Many thanks
Jan
-
Hi Jan,
Here is NSW state archives https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/ They have a few probates from the 1980's but most of the probates after 1980 are at the Supreme Court of NSW.
I can't see a probate for Alastair at NSW SRO. Nor can I see a probate announcement for him in the Sydney Morning Herald up until 1995.
Nor can I see a probate for him at NSW Supreme Court https://onlineregistry.lawlink.nsw.gov.au/content/search-probate-notices
( I did look earlier when you were asking about Marjorie :) )
Ros
adding : the Supreme Court Search Page is for probates AFTER 21 Jan 2013. Before that announcements were in The Sydney Morning Herald.
-
Hi Ros,
Thanks for the feedback - I understand how it works now. I didn't think I'd thought of probate before - must have had a senior moment. Sorry!
It just occurred to me - he was a NZer. I wonder if his probate, if there was one, would have to be processed in NZ?
Jan
-
It's possible Jan if that's where his will was lodged and if he owned assets there. I think it then has to be processed in NSW too. [not sure about this].
No you're not having a senior moment - I just looked for one on SMH when you asked about Marjorie hoping it would give her name and address as executor or benficiary. But no luck .
Ros
-
Thanks Ros, I'll do some digging in NZ records.
-
Hi again rosball

Excellent, thankyou rosball.
Also, just wondering if you photograph deceased estates? If you do, could you please lookup
Name: BAGNALL, William M
Location: Lagoon near Bathurst
Date of Death: 12/02/1921
Date Duty Paid: 26/08/1921
Item Number: [19/10256]

If you don't look this type of record up, no worries, and thanks anyway.
:D
dfc
-
I can happily photograph a deceased estate file dfc :)
There could well be a probate packet for him - there is an annoying gap in the online probate indexes from 1891 to 1927. I can check the microfiche index when I am there and (if available) photograph it. Probate packets should have more useful family history info than a deceased estate file and contain the assets and debts as well.
Ros :)
-
Thankyou so much, I really appreciate it. :-*
-
Hi Rosball
Hope you are able to photo the probate for Ethel Mary Williamson. Date of Death 21 October 1953. Granted 3rd May 1954 . Series 4-417023

I was wondering if I could please make a request with you to photograph the below?
Deceased estate of John (senior) Feening - died 14/12/1923, date paid 4/3/1924
Item - Pre A 003303 [20/936]
ID - 165417
Thanking you,
Selina
-
Hi Selina,
That's fine :) I've added it to my list.
There is possibly a probate packet for him too (there is a gap in the online probate indexes 1891-1927) so I will check the microfiche index for a probate packet as well. The probate packets usually have more family info.

Hi Ros,
I am in Brisbane and can't get to Kingswood. I would really appreciate if you could copy the inguest on the house fire that killed my great grandparents, William and Catherine Turner, at Brookong Station near Lockhart in the NSW Riverina on 2 Mar 1908. I don't think it will be extensive. It seems it would be here
1908-1913 2764 08/1-13/1769 [X2088-2089]
but you know the system better than I do.
I also would like the passenger list from the Gazelle for this voyage arriving in 1845. I am interested in a Stuart/Stewart McDonald and his parents John and Mary.
1845 Oct 16 GAZELLE BRIG Page 082 1841_1866
Are these things you could copy for us? Thank you very much in advance,
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Hi Ros,
Wondering of you still go to the State Library and do lookups.
I am interested in two probates for the following people.
Edward Geary - Date of death 13 November 1855, Granted on 27 March 1856
Edward Dust (also known as Edwin Geary) [on packet Edwin Dust or Geary] Date of death 9 December 1885, Granted on 29 July 1886.
I am in New Zealand so a bit of a long way for me to go to have a look at the probates.
Would appreciate any help.

What a wonderful find. It has a copy of Edwin's birth certificate which we could not find in New Zealand. I will now transcribe the records.
Thank you again really appreciate your help and time.

Hi Ros,
Rootschat's 'Cupoflife' suggested that I ask you if you could supply me with an image of the divorce papers of Marjorie Emma Judd and Raymond Athelstane Judd #1032/1930.
This lady was my father's (Edwin Charles Simmonds) first wife - and it turns out the union (in London, UK) was probably bigamous. She seems to have led a string of besotted men a merry dance! She left him after only 7 months, and he had to wait seven years to marry my mother.
I'd be most grateful for any help you can give me.

Happy to do so PAFC ;)
It sounds interesting ...

Thank you very much, Ros! I look forward to it. :)

I would very much appreciate it as I need his parents names.

I have sent you a private message
-
Hi Pam,
I try to get to the NSW Archives office every 3 weeks. While I'm there I photograph about 12-20 divorces or probates or deceased estate files for rootschatters.
After I have photographed them I will pm you a link to the photographs. They are viewable in any browser so you just have to click on the link I send you (and double click on an image to see full screen).
I expect to get to the Archives next week when I will photograph images for you and Drop Bear and many others.
If this is not convenient for you then you can request the NSW archives to copy them for you (and pay of course). This will probably take another couple of months.
Let me know if you want me to include your request in my list or whether you would rather ask the NSW Archives to do so.

Thank you Ros,

Hi Ros,
Thank you so very much for all these images of the Judd divorce papers - there are so many! Ive had a fascinating afternoon. Also of course for the pages from Owen Colverd's Will Book.
I have had no problem downloading.
Best regards, and thanks again for your extraordinary hard work and invaluable help,
Pam
-
That’s good Pam. I’m glad you could access the records and that they were useful :)
There is such a wealth of info stored out there that I like to help people get their hands on it.
They are a bit of a Lucky dip. Occasionally there is lots of extra family info and extra certificates. :). Sometimes there is less than the standard and not much family info at all :(
Ros
-
Hi Rosball,
Thank you for your generosity in the past and I wonder if it will extend to helping my group of descendants find out a little more about a woman we think is our 4 x great grandmother. She died in the Parramatta Lunatic Asylum, as it was then called, on 31 Dec 1869. Her name was Elizabeth Dowle on the death cert and Elizabeth Dowl on the church register for her burial (we think it should actually be Dowse). Her husband died in 1853 and her children were all living away from the Sydney area except for one son who was at Campbelltown until 1862. So she was probably admitted 1862-69 but we are not sure. The lack of information on the death cert possibly indicates a lack of information on her asylum records but we would like to check her admission papers if that is possible. Thanks, Geoff Turner. I will attach the death cert in two pieces.
-
The rest of the death cert. Geoff
-
I’ll do my best Geoff :)

Thanks, Ros. I know you are a miracle worker but even miracle workers have limitations, I realise.

Hello from England,
If it's not too much trouble, would you be able to find, please, the probate record of a distant relative of mine? I'm looking for Anthony Edward O'Hara HUNT who was born 21 Oct 1901 at Burston, near St Albans, Hertfordshire, England and died 16 Dec 1975 in NSW, Australia. Probate was granted 15 Mar 1976 and is at Western Sydney Records Centre, Kingswood.
I don't know when he emigrated, if he ever married or had children. Any information at all would be most welcome. His WWII army service number was NX72184, he enlisted at Paddington, NSW, and the name of his father was Edward Hunt.
Many thanks

There may be a slight delay in my getting to the archives. My dog is having an operation on his leg and is to be kept immobilised in a playpen after that. I don't think I'll be able to leave him alone all caged up for a week or so - or until I find a dog-sitter.
-
Hope it gets well soon. Thanks for your assistance.

Hope it all goes well, Ros!

Thanks Joe and Geoff :)

I'm afraid the NSW Archives reading room is now temporarily closed. :(
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/news/update-covid-19
I'm not at all sure when they will reopen.
Sorry about the delay. Yes this would be a perfect time, while we are self-isolating, to catch up on family history. but I guess the Government doesn't see it as an essential service ...?
Stay safe .... (and ask lots of questions questions on the forum - we all need some distraction)
Ros
-
Tah and stay safe too.
-
Good news! :) :D
The Archives have reopened with 3.5 hour appointments and I have booked one for next week. :)
I hope to satisfy requests from Joe, Lucy and Meg ... and maybe DCS and Jackie (if there is time).
Have I overlooked any requests from before April?
I should be able to catch up very soon :)
Ros

Great news, Ros. Enjoy!

Looking for any record of probate for Maud (nee Tomlin, formerly Mackie) or Thomas Stewart - both died in 1965 in Burwood from the BDM.NSW.GOV records but unable to find any newspaper announcements or graves (find a grave). Last known living in Mosman, Warringah in 1963. Thomas was 82, Maud 73. Thanks.
Very little Australian research before sorry, so apologies if any silly questions asked.

That would be great thanks Ros. I guess there may be one for her first husband Henry Mackie died on 2 Dec 1932 aged 65 (25 years older than Maud). Great newspaper articles on their marriage and his death.
-
just found Henry's using the link you sent, thanks...

(but it's after 1am here and I'm fading but will look again in the morning)

Thanks Ros, so are you to reply! Just spotted it's late sorry ( ::) )
Thought there's be one for Henry's father James - he had a large write up in the paper when he died in Burrawang in late April / early May 1911 - but can't find one sadly (and his wife had died 2 years earlier).
i did find a record on the same site for their assisted passage - presumably that would only be the passenger listing which is online at ancestry anyway?
-
Hi Deirdre,
It's after 1am here and I'm not absorbing info well. :(
There is a gap in the online indexes for probates from abt 1890 to abt 1927 so there well may be a probate for James which doesn't show online. I can check the microfiche when next I am there. Just give me the names and dates of death of any who died during that time span.

Ros
-
And here is death notice for the Thomas STEWART who died in 1965 registered in Burwood. But he seems to be the wrong man! Wrong age and wife :(
Ros
Oh no. Can’t open the pdf on my phone but that’s a shame. Guess Thomas Stewart is a more common name than Maud.
-
Opened them now! Definitely the right Maud, right address and daughters, but didn’t know about a son called Tom, unless he’s a step-son. Tom was nearly 10 years older than Maud so it seemed a good guess that it was his death. Back to the search for him then.
Thanks for looking for the death notices though. I had searched extensively with Trove - amazing resource - but not found them.
-
Trove is wonderful but for The Sydney Morning Herald it only goes up to 1955.
This may be the right Thomas STEWART who died in 1974 (in Canberra). There are some familiar family members but I guess they are fairly common names.
-
Thanks Ros, Shame it doesn’t give an age but son Thomas would agree with Maud’s death notice. Guess the others are only the son’s family.
-
There is a probate record for this Thomas STEWART at NSW archives https://search.records.nsw.gov.au/permalink/f/1ebnd1l/ADLIB_RNSW111865936
And the cutting came from Sydney Morning Herald 8 March 1974. It sounds like he was just visiting Canberra when he died.
-
He would have been 91 in 1974, quite an age to travel 😀
-
Just been searching for a probate notice which may have given more info about him but I can't find one :(
I'll photograph his probate - we'll soon find out.
The names of his children are given in the same order in both Maud's death notice and his death notice which adds to the likelihood of it being him.
-
Thanks Ros, really helpful. I’ve just found a likely first wife from the electoral registers and then an amazingly detailed war record. Will explore that more now.
-
I was assuming the children in Maud’s death notice were her daughters’ children 🙄
-
I think I have found the probate notice (in Canberra Times) http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-page12218292
and the executor. is probably the son
There is a marriage in 1951 NSW BDM for this man to a Barbara and there is a war service record for this man with NOK father Thomas STEWART in RAAF WW2 https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=4601827
I've only skimmed it :)
His father's address at the time was in Strathfield. Where was your Thomas STEWART living in the 1940's?
-
In Mosman, Marringah, NSW from at least 1933 (with likely first wife Elizabeth Jeffrey (nee Roddick)) until 1963 with Maud - all found on the electoral rolls.
-
Oh well back to the drawing board .... :)
adding : no the address in Strathfield for Maud and for the presumed son's father are the same.
We're on the right track :)
-
Thsnks Ros, you are being most helpful. I have only been researching this family group for 2 days and thanks to links on here have found info i never expected to. Checking other links i spotted your offer of probate records and responded, but this is all extra so thanks again. Looks like Thomas married his first wife, Elizabeth Jeffrey Roddick, presumably Thomas’s mother, in Tasmania in 1911. Both appear to be from Scotland.
-
Pleasure to help Deidre :)
I think this is Elizabeth's death notice ... ??? https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/18145188
and it seems that she was mother of Marjory rather than Thomas ... ??? Was there an earlier marriage for Thomas ...?
adding : whoops no son Thomas was the last mentioned in Maud's death notice so presumably the youngest ... ???
-
I’ve been trying to unravel that - hadn’t found the death notice so thanks for that - as there’s a Marjorie Reddick Little Stewart on the electoral roll with Thomas and Elizabeth in 1933 (922 Military Rd, Mosman, Warringah, Thomas is retired).
-
Thomas didn’t hang about! He married Maud sometime in 1950 (from the BDM site) and travelled with her to visit family in England in December.
-
We didn’t know Maud had a son, so i was assuming that Thomas was a step-son. So maybe another marriage for Thomas whose mother was a Little
-
Here is a death notice for a Bruce SHOOBERT (mentioned in Elizabeth's death notice as husband of Marjory (Marjorie)).
Not sure if this is the right one ...?
-
Weirder and weirder 🙄 will look at that death notice now.
Was checking the obituary for Maud’s first husband Henry Mackie and it only mentions the 2 daughters Betty and Margery, so no Thomas there. Strangely another Marjorie / Margery though.
But...i also saw the death notice of Maud’s mother, at Strathfield (as you queried re Thomas’s service record) 🤔
-
This only started as a ‘look’ for a death for Maud, with a second husband, known as Uncle Tommy. That is now sorted but the search to complete the picture is proving to be a challenge.
If that’s the right husband for Marjorie and if she was the same age, born around 1909, it might point to an earlier marriage for Thomas. I do love a challenge but am extremely grateful for your help Ros given my lack of experience with Australian records 😀
Edited to say... doesn’t make sense as if she’s Elizabeth’s daughter but not Thomas’s why does she have names which link her to Thomas as well (Little)
-
Ros, it appears to be the right Shooberts. Bruce and Marjorie Roddick are buried together in Woolongong
-
I'm confused too Deirdre :)
Oh good just saw your post that it was the correct Bruce :)
Well maybe it will be clearer after I have photographed some of the probates .... they *should* contain death certs, wills and more info about heirs. Occasionally they contain extra certs, such as death of first wife, marriage to second wife etc .... (let's hope so :) )
I was hoping to get to Archives in about 8 days. But just now they announced that we have 18 new covid cases in NSW - only some of these are from travellers already in enforced quarantine and some others from known sources which leaves several others with an unknown source. So now we are being strongly advised to stay home and not make unnecessary trips. Well this may change in a week or so ... but at the moment it may be a while before I can get there :(
-
Thanks for the update. Annoying when plans have to change but understandable. Our local archives aren’t open yet and travel restrictions (in Wales) are only lifting slowly. Great we can do so much online, keeps us busy. I think i need to print out all the death notices etc and see if it helps sort people out. Strange though, just realised, Marjorie Shoobert died before Thomas Stewart yet is not mentioned 🤔
-
Glad you understand Deirdre :) I love Wales - my son-in-law and his family are from LLanfairfechan where we have spent some lovely holidays.
Perhaps we should look at Betty - er umm maybe Elizabeth ...?
-
No problems, Ros. We appreciate your efforts and if there are delays we all understand. Keep smiling and keep safe! Geoff
-
I'm in Cardiff and not been to Llanfairfechan sadly, but great to know that you have been here to visit :)
Which Betty? Maud's daughter?
-
Good news!
Ros
G'day Ros,
How ya doing ?
How did you go with my requests ?
-
Hi Joe,
All is going well. :)
I did the Toms divorce, the Bishop divorce and the Sawtell divorce back in June. Did you not receive a link to the photographs? No matter I can send them again. Or is there another request which I have missed?

Hello Ros, you probably can't get to the Records Office at the moment, but if you go again some time in the future, would it be possible please to photograph another probate packet for me?
Samuel HOLT
Number: NRS-13660-3-[17/2347]-Series 3_20078
Title: Samuel HOLT, Date of death 5 November 1875, Granted on 29 May 1890
I have looked for one for his wife too, though can't seem to see one -
Emma HOLT, died 4 December 1880
Thanks again for your generosity,
Maddy
-
Hello Maddy,
Yes I am in strict lockdown at the moment but very happy to photograph these when I am next able to get there.
I will check microfiche for Emma HOLT as there is a gap in the online index for probates c 1891-1927.
Ros :)

Good news :) The NSW State Archives reopened today but the rest of this week is fully booked.
However I have booked morning and afternoon sessions of Wednesday October 27. I hope to complete all the requests then. If not I'll make another booking shortly afterwards.
Sorry you have had such a long wait ....
Ros

Thanks for letting us know, Ros. Great news, but more work for you. Still, I’m sure you’d rather have things returning to normal.
I’m sure we are all grateful for the service you provide.

Hi Eames,
Just a gentle reminder to check your pm's :)
Ros

Hi Ros ;)
I was checking through some open-ended (unfinished) research when this thread popped up & decided it may be worth a post?
I have someone (not fully researched) but I'd love if you could find anything at all on...
John Barker Crooks b 1919 Antrim, Ireland, son of Joseph Gordon Crooks & Lilian Jude (g/aunt)
J B Crooks died 16 Dec 1963 Parkdale, Cheltenham, Victoria, Australia https://billiongraves.com/grave/John-Barker-Crooks/5638998#/
If I have the correct entry (snip below) from Covington, Kentucky, City Directory, 1943...
"Crooks Eliza (Wid J B)..."
I don't know the maiden surname of Eliza/Elizabeth, when/where they married etc.
I'm sort of jumping a dyke or 2 (couldn't resist when I saw this thread) ;D
If there's not enough info. I'll understand & will do more research on this line! ;D

Hello Annie,
Ros is unlikely to find anything in the NSW State Records Office for John Barker CROOKS as he died in Victoria. ;) I can't see any records for him in the NSW State Archives
https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/
His death is indexed on the Victorian BDM: registration number 835 / 1964. Father - Joseph CROOKS, Mother - Lilian JUDE
https://my.rio.bdm.vic.gov.au/efamily-history/626bb822620e7120bfeca96d/record/5c654c5a4aba80ac31d1267b?q=efamily&givenName=John%20Barker&familyName=CROOKS
I can't see a marriage in Victoria.

Hi Eames,
Just a gentle reminder to check your pm's :)
Ros
You're a gem for doing that in your free time. I've downloaded it all with many thanks - if anything you needed on search, I do my best to return the favour when possible!

Thanks maddys,
I wasn't too hopeful as I could see there was a border issue & not knowing enough at this point, no idea of his movements.
Time to get my spade out ;D

Hi Annie :)
Here's alink to The Age, 18 Dec,1963 https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=MDQ-9Oe3GGUC&dat=19631218&printsec=frontpage&hl=en
According to Ryerson Index there is a death notice for him in this edition - yes there is!
Ros

The funeral notice is in the same edition
Ros

Hi Ros,
Thanks for your info. it's much appreciated & I now have a name for his wife to help!
He's a mystery, haven't found anything between his birth & death ???
Annie
-
Well found Ros!
-
Well found Ros!
Definitely Ros!
I've since found his DC...wife named Elizabeth, the death notice named her Kathleen, seems to have been an error by the newspaper reporter or his informant?
I will add to my old thread with a link to here as I've found some contradictory info. which I need to follow up on...

Hi everyone,
We have moved away from Sydney and I am sorry but I am unable to manage the drive to the archives anymore.
I've had fun, made new friends, and had some laughs. We solved some mysteries and created others.
Looking for someone to take over visiting the archives to photograph the records.
Ros
-
Thanks for the wonderful work you have done for us all, Ros. It has been greatly appreciated and you deserve to concentrate on your own priorities for a change! Geoff
-
Couldn't agree more Geoff.
Ros, you have been an amazing asset for which I and many many others am so grateful. Thankyou again and best wishes for the new move! :D

What Geoff and maddys said, and a personal thank you for the records you photographed for me a few short years ago. Hope you are enjoying your new home.

Ros thank you so much for the services you have provided in the past. You certainly went above and beyond what was requested for me and I am very grateful. I could never hope to visit where my great uncle was and I gained so much extra information from what you were able to access. Many thanks and I hope you enjoy your new home.
Best wishes
CF.

Hi Ros,
Can’t thank you enough for the many time you have helped me and many others with records from the archives.
Much Love and Best Wishes
