Title: Wills brothers kia WW1 - help needed please
Post by: las camelias on Monday 27 October 14 11:07 GMT (UK)
I am researching two brothers who died within days of each other in WW1 and am going round in circles trying to find them in England or Wales in 1911 - its odd that I can't find either of them.

Would a kind rootschatter please have a search to see if they are north of the border?  I would be very grateful.

William Wills born 1890 Stratton Dorset
Alfred Edward Wills born 1891 Herringstone Dorset

Many thanks
LC

I expect you looked at the CWGC website at some point, but did you notice that they have misspelled Alfred as ALDRED? Chances are that that will be the same spelling on the memorial. Mistakes happen but they are very obliging and will correct the paper and stonework records if you  provide them with satisfactory evidence. You will appreciate that they cannot make a change without it.

There is a marriage, and subsequent 1911 census, of:

June qtr 1909
Dorchester district     vol 5a, page 766

Wills, Edward Alfred
Hyde, Emily

His age looks correct on that census!

Dorchester Registration District contains the parish of Winterborne Herringston ;D

I've looked at that record K.  I am pretty sure it's not him because the name is the wrong way round, ie Edward Alfred instead of Alfred Edward, and my man was definitely not married.  Thanks anyway for taking the time.  Still hoping someone in Scotland will find something. I just think its very strange that I can't find an entry for either of the brothers .... the mystery remains ... where were they?

Imber, yes have seen the mis-spelling on CWGC.  I have made a note on my To Do List, even though it stretches from here till next June!

Oddly , there is a Alfred Wills age 22 on the Scottish 1911 - but I have not been able to establish with a free search which county he is in  ???
You can check on Scotlands People website. I have tried 3 times to eliminate each county (I do this often!) but still have came up with no matches for each county.
Unfortunately it requires the purchase of credits to view further and to look at the original Census return to find Place of birth etc.
£7 buys 30 credits - 6 credits will let you view document.

I did notice that on his service record:

1) On 1 page his name is quoted as Alfred Ewart Wills ::)
2) His next of kin was father Alfred Wills, Sedge Hill, nr Shaftesbury
3) His effects were sent to his mother Laura Wills, White Bridge, Semley, Wiltshire

Oh K, I've missed his service record entirely.  Well done you.  I'll have a look at that.  His name was definitely Alfred Edward, I've got the evidence!!  That must be a mis-spelling or a mis-hearing - is there such a word or have I just made that up!!

I've not been able to make a connection with these two boys and the village of Semley where they are named on a church plaque.  Thanks K.  You little genius.  I'm off to investigate.

Looby, will hang fire on that suggestion for a bit longer.  Cheers.  (I used to call my daughter Looby when she was little)

So did my parents and years later some girls at work!

Back to Alfred and William - have you found their parents on the 1911 England Census?
Not sure you going to find these lads on Scottish Census....

Oh well done Looby, yes I am certain that has got to be Alfred .... surname mis-spelt as Wiles instead of Wills.  Now, where has his brother Wm got to?

Thank you so much.  One down, one to go!

It's  spelt  Willis   on  another site ,  so that's  another    version of the  name to look for  William !

I never cease to be amazed and thankful for the help given by rootschat members.  Thank you so much K and Jan57.  That's another two bio's completed on my list of nearly 200.  Yes, 200 in total for all my parishes put together.  The good thing is, it doesn't matter how long it takes, the information will still be there next year!

If anyone is still looking in Scotland, stop!

Ever grateful,

LC

Good,
Didn't think when they would be on the Scottish Census when I noticed they had signed up for Dorsetshire Regiment. Seemed more likely they had always been in Dorset.
Are you researching local war memorials?  Good luck with your searches. :)

Hi Looby,

I am OPC for 7 parishes in Wiltshire.  Just over 2 years ago I did some research into the names on the war memorials/plaques etc in each parish and, at that time, was at least able to give each name 'an 'identity.'  Now I am revisiting and adding much more information.

I didn't really think these two boys would be in Scotland in 1911, but you have to chase every angle - Alfred was working for the Countess of Moray - she was probably Scottish - so close!

By the way, the Alfred Wills service record attached to a tree on Ancestry - I've contacted the tree owner; he was very surprised to hear that Alfred and Wm are on a plaque in a Wiltshire church!  We are going to talk again as soon as he lands (on flight somewhere in N.Zealand at the moment).  As an OPC I get involved in all sorts of stuff but have made so many friends over the past 6 years, real and virtual -  love it.

Happy Days.  LC
