Title: Holywell St James lookup please
Post by: Ali M on Friday 31 October 14 02:13 GMT (UK)
Hi there - my 3x gt grandparents Sarah Jones and Samuel Edwards married at Holywell on 6 Feb 1808.  I've seen a transcription of the record and it was particularly helpful - confirming their birth dates and even giving both sets of parent's names.  Both were otp.  However the 1851 census states they were both born in Paisley Renfrewshire!!.  They were then living in Liverpool.  He died before 1861 and in this census the widowed Sarah was listed as being born in  Holywell.

I'd particularly like to confirm Samuel's birth.  The marriage record gives him a birth year of 1787 (as do census records)  parents John & Elizabeth Edwards.  Could someone please check and see if he was born in Holywell and if it is not too difficult any indication of his parent's marriage.

Sarah was born in 1788 parents Edward and Anne Jones on her marriage record.  Again I'd really like to know if she was indeed born in Holywell and any more information about her parents.

with many thanks
Alison Molineux, NZ

It all seems a bit puzzling to me Alison.Having a lot of relatives who married at Holywell St James I'm amazed at the supposed detail on the 1808 marriage record! The letters given OTP are often misleading in that it does not necessarily mean that they were both in the Parish.Sometimes it merely means that they were resident in the Parish at the time of the marriage.

If they were born in the Parish with parents as you say they should show in the transcribed Holywell Parish Baptism booklets I have.I'll look later!

William Russell Jones.

There are no such baptisms for Samuel and Sarah with named parents you gave at around the years you gave at Holywell.

Thank you very much for looking them up William.  It confirms what I suspected  and "that" brick wall is still firmly in place!   best wishes, Alison

I'm still puzzled as to how you came up with their parents names?

I have had a look at the image for the marriage of Samuel Edwards to Sarah Jones on Findmypast, details are:

Parish of Nannerch Flintshire

Samuel Edwards age 25 of this parish, parents John and Elizabeth Edwards. Would give birth year of 1783.
Sarah Jones age 20, of this parish, parents Edward and Anne Jones.

Married by Banns 6th February 1808.

Witnesses: Hugh Jones and Grace Lewis

Thought that Hugh Jones, witness may have been one of Sarah's siblings, so looked if that could be a possibility and found a Hugh Jones baptised 22nd January 1786, Halkyn.
Parents Edward Jones Windymill and his wife Anne.

Is there any sign of Sarah in Halkyn? The same with Samuel really.I strongly suspect given the names that they are from the Holywell area.Samuel could have been from any of the adjacent Parishes;Halkyn,Whitford or Ysceifiog.

William, I'm glad you know where all these parishes are :)

There looks to be a baptism of a Sarah Jones to a Ed Jones of Windymill and wife Anne, on 9th December 1787, Halkyn.

Half of my families are from the area!

Hello again William  and sgf28

Thank you so much for doing this extra research.

I think find my past might have it a bit wrong.  I found this on the Clwyd family history society web page where Jill Rose had transcribed both Edwards and Jones marriages:
 159/37   6 Feb  Holywell                               Sarah JONES sp/20 otp d/o Edwd & Anne m. Saml EDWARDS ba/21 otp s/o John & Eliz.
when I did the reverse and looked up Samuel there was the same info. but no parent's names.  I'm certain Samuel was 21 not 25 when he and Sarah married.  As for Nannerch v. Holywell  I'm not sure which is the more likely/reliable.

Thank you for the information about Hugh Jones as a witness and yes looks pretty certain he is Sarah's brother and that she was born in Halkyn.

I don't have a find my past subscription but noticed through the LDS site that FindMyPast appear to have a
Samuel Edwards baptised in 1787 in Holywell.  Could one of you please check that for me please

once again with many thanks for all your help.  Alison

Entries are incorrectly given as for Nannerch on both Family Search and FindMyPast. They are for Holywell though.

There is a baptism for a Samuel Edwards at Holywell in 1787.His parents though are given as Thomas and Jane Edwards.

aha thank you that clears that up.   Their first  four children were Edward, John, Samuel and Anne- Elizabeth, so I think I've got his parents right as john and Elizabeth.  I'll have another try with Paisley records just in case.

best wishes, Alison
